The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized cartons of aphrodisiac products and sex enhancement drugs worth N12 million in Sokoto State.
NAFDAC Coordinator in the state, Mr Garba Adamu, on Monday said that the agency’s patrol team made the seizures during routine patrol operations across markets in Sokoto and environs.
Adamu explained that the products were unregistered, highly unsafe due to dangerous ingredients used in the preparations, and an eyesore because of the blatant use of pornographic pictures on the packages.
He appealed to the public to desist from buying such products from unlicensed premises and only patronize registered and safe products from licensed outlets.
”We also call on the general public to always report hawkers and dealers of such products to NAFDAC, as well as report any adverse reactions they may get from taking such products or any other regulated products.
“Some marketers are in the habit of dumping expired or about-to-expire products in markets in Sokoto and environs, while some are taken to border markets and rural areas for consumption,” he said.
The coordinator cautioned traders against selling adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered and expired goods to the public, reiterating that NAFDAC would continue the enforcement at all the times.
According to him, the operation was also extended to the agrochemicals and cosmetics stores, part of the agency’s efforts to ensure that quality and right products were in circulation in the markets.
He urged Nigerians to always check the NAFDAC registration levels as well as the manufacturing and expiry dates of items before using them.
Adamu commended sister agencies, law enforcement agencies, traders’ associations, individuals and groups for their supports to NAFDAC toward safeguarding public health.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has filed an appeal challenging the judgement by the Federal High Court, which acquitted Abiodun Agbele, an associate of the former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and three others, in the N1.2bn money laundering charge brought against them by the commission.
In a notice, the commission faulted Justice Nnamdi Dimgba’s ruling, which stated that Agbele, Sylvan Mcnamara Limited, De Privateer Limited, and Spotless Investment Limited do not have a case to answer.
The defendants are standing trial on a 24-count amended charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N1.219 billion.
The N1.2bn is said to be part of the sum of N4.7 billion belonging to the Federal Government and allegedly transferred from an account associated with the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, in the Central Bank of Nigeria.
However, in June, Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court Abuja upheld the no case submission application filed by the defendants.
In the notice of appeal, the EFCC, through its prosecuting counsel, Senior Advocate of Wahab Shittu, listed 17 grounds of appeal and sought two reliefs from the Court of Appeal.
First, it sought an order allowing the appeal set aside the ruling of Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, and in its place holding that the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents have a case to answer on several counts of the amended charge.
The commission also sought an order directing the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents to enter into their defence before the trial court.
The EFCC expressed its dissatisfaction with the whole decision of the lower court June 21 ruling.
The commission said there is overwhelming evidence that N1.219 million from the account of the National Security Adviser, NSA, of Nigeria domiciled with CBN and earmarked for security purposes and paid into the account of the 2nd respondent by the office of the NSA was unlawfully diverted by the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents to fund Fayose’s governorship election.
It said that the “trial court erred in law in using the ongoing proceedings before another court of competent jurisdiction to determine the merits of the proceedings before the trial court.”

Only 1.3 per cent of Nigerian informal businesses reach over N2.5 million profit on a monthly basis, the Informal Economy Report 2024, has shown.
The report, compiled by financial technology provider, Moniepoint, revealed that the network of unregistered businesses, contributing over half of the country’s GDP with teeming street vendors, artisans and service providers, appeared prosperous based on revenue figures.
Launched over the weekend in Abuja, the report also showed that businesses in the informal market contributed over half of Nigeria’s GDP as 72.3 per cent of informal businesses surpassed the N1m mark in monthly revenue.
It explained, “Put together, businesses in the informal market contribute over half of Nigeria’s GDP. This is evident in their revenues with the bulk of them (72.3 per cent) hitting monthly revenues of over N1,000,000 monthly.”
The report noted that their actual profit deviated from the high figures, saying that individually, most of them make less than N250,000 monthly, on the higher end of the spectrum, only about 1.3 per cent of businesses in Nigeria’s informal economy earn above N2.5m monthly.
According to the report, a significant portion (68.2 per cent) of their income went towards feeding and family expenses, stressing that it is followed by reinvestment in the business (29.7 per cent), with only a small percentage (3 out of 10) prioritising reinvestment.
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Anita, expressed optimism that the report would help the government to better understand the informal sector to know their needs and enhance growth and inclusion in the country.
She stressed, “We will see how we can take every recommendation and move the report forward. We will support you to do much better. We will rely on this report to better understand the informal sector and know their needs as it aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of financial inclusion in the country.”
The Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Charles Odili, on his part said that the numbers support the reality as reaffirmed by this report, pointing out that the vast majority of Nigeria’s approximately 40 million small businesses reside in the informal sector.
He added that they are all around them from the unregistered beauty shop that began with a simple stool under a tree for customers to sit while the stylist worked her magic to the fruit store that grew from a wheelbarrow that is born of both necessity and entrepreneurial zeal, they exemplify the famous ‘hustling.
The Managing Director of Moniepoint MFB, Babatunde Olofin, believed that the report was focused on the significance of Nigeria’s informal economy, the challenges faced by informal businesses in accessing credit, the impact of credit access on business growth and the challenges in formalising businesses.

American rapper, Lil Durk’s 10-year-old son allegedly shot his stepdad, Joshua Pippens, during a domestic dispute with the youngster’s mother.
Surveillance cameras captured the moment the child allegedly grabbed a weapon from his stepdad, Joshua Pippens, aimed the gun at him, and fired.
In the footage, Pippens, seen in orange, can be observed attempting to restrain the child’s mother, who is wearing purple. In the middle of the confrontation, the child, wearing a red t-shirt and shorts, aims what seems to be a gun directly at Pippens.
Subsequently, the child points the weapon at Pippens, and a single gunshot is heard. Pippens can then be seen falling to the ground after being hit by a bullet.
The shooting incident occurred on July 1, since which time Pippens has spoken out from his hospital bed.
Speaking via his Instagram page, Pippens claimed that he was not the aggressor and that the young child acted on the institutions of his mother.
He wrote, “As y’all can see I was not the aggressor. And y’all also can see how I still had my gun on my hip. He grabbed my gun off my hip following his mom’s lead and tried to shoot me and then actually shot me.
“My gun was on my hip and I was trying to protect myself from getting shot. I never in a million years thought a kid I bought four wheelers and paid football leagues and everything would do this but he only knows what mom shows him. I still love him like he’s mine.”
Pippins suggested that the argument may have been about custody arrangements over a child the couple share.
“Whatever makes y’all feel better. That’s why I got custody of my kids and she don’t. Y’all so internet think [sic] god it was me that took the shot and not her,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, rapper Lil Durk is yet to react to the incident.
