Minister of Works David Umahi has provided fresh details surrounding the death of 26-year-old Mary Habila, saying the young nurse had been managing an existing health condition and reportedly complained of nose bleeding before she died at his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, Umahi clarified that Habila was not his personal staff, contrary to some reports circulating online. He explained that she was a nurse employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences and had worked closely with him and his family for about three years.
According to the minister, Habila had been receiving medical treatment in Turkey for an undisclosed health condition, with him personally covering the cost of her care. He added that shortly before her death on June 27, she spoke with her boyfriend and informed him that she was experiencing nose bleeding.
“She was like a daughter to me and my family. She worked closely with us for about three years. She was a nurse employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, not a physiotherapist. She had an existing health condition and was receiving treatment in a Turkish hospital, and I personally paid her medical bills,” Umahi said.
The minister’s comments come amid growing public attention over Habila’s death, with many Nigerians calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, Habila’s family has postponed her burial indefinitely after the Ebonyi State Police Command insisted that an autopsy must be carried out before her body can be released. The burial had initially been scheduled for Friday, July 17.
In a statement signed by Elisha Haruna on behalf of the family, relatives announced the postponement, citing unforeseen circumstances, while expressing appreciation for the support and prayers they have received from the public. They said a new burial date would be communicated later.
