It could be recalled that of the first 1000 universities globally, only Covenant University made the list in Nigeria, numbered among the rank of 801-1000 in the recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025.

Speaking during the 19th Convocation which was held at the weekend at the institution’s chapel, Dr. Oyeyepo said when he received the vision to establish Covenant University, he became curious of how to add value and make the university different from the country grappling with the system bedeviled with incessant strikes.

“So, when I received the vision to establish the Covenant University, I needed to find out how to make it work. If there is not enough value to add, we have no business getting involved. And that’s how I began as I examined institutions like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Carter, MIT, Stanford, Duke, and Diamond.

Beyond the history of their funding, I was interested in their Biblical roots, funding philosophy, programme development, and their innovations on this. So, I got involved in searching for world class human resources.

When God calls He backs the call. When God calls He goes before the call to effect the calling. When God calls He walks with the call to make it happen. When God calls, He walks through the call to get the job done. And when God calls, He goes ahead to get the job done. That’s our story.

Speaking on what makes the university unique, Dr. Oyedepo said the pursuit of the vision had been strategic, adding that there was no guess work while the programmes run by the institution were custom-built and original, saying that character development remains the summary of the custom-built story of Covenant .

Oyedepo, who is also the presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, aka Winners Chapel revealed that he has never earned any wages from the university since its inception in 2002 in pursuit of the vision.

He emphasised that his motivation was never driven by personal gain but by a desire to contribute meaningfully to society.

To the graduates he said, “You are created to be a contributor. Find a place to contribute. You cannot be a contributor and be a failure. You will be part of the solution and not those who are problems.”

He advised them to remain committed to God’s plan, emphasising the importance of staying aligned with that purpose, adding “We will see a brand new Nigeria. Don’t jump the fence. Your star is where you belong. A commitment to be at the centre of God’s plan is very essential.” Exposed Celebrities Video
