His remarks came during the opening of the 2024/2025 Legal Year and Re- Dedication Service at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul’ s, Anglican Communion in Diobu, Port Harcourt, where he expressed his concerns about the erosion of judicial integrity.

Governor Fubara expressed frustration over the current situation, condemning certain judges who allegedly accept bribes to manipulate justice for their personal interests. He stated, ” Some of you call yourselves legal luminaries. You know the truth, yet you choose to mislead the public to please your paymasters. The law concerning governance in the

state falls under the jurisdiction of the State High Court, regardless of involvement from bodies like INEC or the Police. ” His comments reflect a broader concern about the role of judges in upholding the rule of law amid political and economic pressures.

The Governor emphasized the significant role of judges, who he described as representatives of justice and, in essence, agents of God. He urged them to uphold their duty with integrity and not succumb to external pressures. ”

Judges, you are the embodiment of God’ s justice on Earth. Your role is to defend truth and ensure fair treatment for all. Failing to do so will have severe consequences, ” he warned, highlighting the moral and ethical responsibilities that come with their positions.

Fubara also acknowledged the challenges faced by judicial officers in Rivers State, including threats and harassment intended to coerce them into compliance. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to justice, stating, ” You must be prepared to endure persecution for doing what is right. This struggle will not last forever. ” His words serve as a rallying cry for judges to resist corruption and stand firm against external influences.

Reflecting on the past year, Fubara noted the progress made since October 2023, attributing it to divine grace and the collective efforts of the judiciary and his administration. As the session concluded, Fubara reiterated his commitment to ensuring that justice prevails in Rivers State, urging judges to remain vigilant against any form of compromise in their roles. By invoking divine judgment, he not only seeks accountability but also calls for a renewed commitment to integrity within the judiciary.
