This information was revealed in a statement by SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, on Saturday in Abeokuta. According to the police report, the incident occurred around 1: 15 a. m. on 8th April, 2023 at 127, Old Scholar Palace, Igan Road, in the Ago Iwoye area of Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State.

Hassan was arrested following a complaint filed by the 62- year- old landlady of the building, Adejoke Salau, at the Ago Iwoye Divisional Police Headquarters.

Salau had reported that she was awakened by a commotion coming from one of her buildings in the compound. Upon investigating, she discovered that the structure was engulfed in flames, trapping the tenants inside. Thanks to the swift intervention of neighbors, the three tenants were rescued, but the fire completely razed the building, leaving nothing but charred remains.

Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ago Iwoye, Noah Adekanye, led a team of officers to the scene. The tenants were invited to the police station for questioning as part of the investigation. During the interrogation, one of the tenants, Busayo Falola, revealed that she had seen her ex- lover, Yusuf Hassan, lurking near her window at around 12: 30 a. m. , just before the fire broke out.

Falola explained that she was alarmed by Hassan’ s presence at such an unusual hour and immediately raised the alarm by screaming. She quickly fled her room and sought refuge in another tenant’ s room. This action prompted the other tenants to come out and investigate, only to discover flames emanating from Falola’ s apartment.

Upon learning this information, the police launched a manhunt for Yusuf Hassan, who was soon apprehended. Initially, Hassan denied any involvement in the incident. However, during further interrogation, he confessed to setting the house on fire. In his confession, Hassan admitted that he had been attempting to reconcile with Falola for some time, but his efforts had been in vain. Frustrated by her refusal to reconcile, he decided to take drastic action.

According to the police report, Hassan confessed that he purchased N500 worth of petrol, poured it into Falola’ s room through the window, and ignited the fire with the intention of burning her alive. His motive was driven by his anger and rejection after failing to restore their relationship.

SP Abimbola Oyeyemi further stated that Hassan has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The police are preparing to file charges against him, and he will likely face prosecution for his actions.

This incident highlights the dangers of unresolved emotional conflicts, which can lead to extreme and violent actions. It also underscores the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions to relationship issues and handling rejection in a more mature and responsible manner. The swift response by the neighbors and the police helped prevent a more tragic outcome, but the incident still resulted in significant property loss and could have claimed lives.
