This initiative, conducted in partnership with the Yoruba Mathematics Class on YouTube, marks NIEPA’s first public training aimed at incorporating the Yoruba language into mathematics education.
Dr. David Shofoyeke, the acting Director General of NIEPA, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that early grade reading (EGR) and early grade mathematics (EGMA) have successfully been implemented in northern Nigeria using Hausa. He questioned why a similar approach could not be adopted for the Yoruba-speaking population.
The training covered various topics, including lesson planning for early grade mathematics in Yoruba, the significance of indigenous languages in education, the role of language in teaching, leadership in instruction, and how to support teachers in early grade mathematics.
Kehinde Adenegan, an expert who integrated drama into his teaching methodology, stated, “It’s time we leverage our indigenous resources to enhance classroom instruction and make the teaching-learning process effective, with language choice being a crucial factor.”
The workshop aims to promote cultural relevance and sensitivity in mathematics education, enhance students’ understanding of mathematical concepts within their cultural context, support the development of bilingual education programs that incorporate Yoruba language and culture, and empower educators to create inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments.
NIEPA’s Media Officer, Bodunde Tenabe, noted that the training brought together distinguished experts, including Dr. Kehinde Adenegan, Dr. Sulaymon Mohammad Raji, Dr. Tolu Omiyale, and Folajogun Akinkuowo, who provided valuable insights on various topics, including a translation overview of the primary mathematics curriculum for grades 1-6 in Yoruba.
