A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member named Busayo Endurance has accused Nigerian Police operatives of demanding N500,000 to track down an online marketer who allegedly defrauded him of N610,000.....Read Full Article>>
In an interview with SaharaReporters, Busayo recounted how he found the marketer, identified as Gadget Sabo Aliu Enterprise-Liberty Enterprise, on Jiji while looking to purchase a laptop.
He was directed to a shop in Abuja, where he negotiated a price of N610,000 for the laptop and transferred the money to the marketer’s MoniePoint account.
However, upon arriving at the shop, Busayo discovered that the real owner refused to hand over the laptop, stating that the seller had not credited him. Realizing he had been scammed, Busayo approached MoniePoint Microfinance Bank, which advised him to obtain a court order to reverse the transaction.
Busayo then involved the police, who informed him that he needed to pay N100,000 to secure a court order and an additional N400,000 for tracking the fraudster. After obtaining the court order, he submitted it to MoniePoint, only to be told that the funds had already been transferred out of the account.
A lawyer assisted him in acquiring the court order, but when he contacted the police in Abuja, they claimed the scammer was in Benin and required N400,000 to pursue him. Subsequently, a source within the Benin police informed Busayo that the scammer was actually in Lagos, and the police requested N500,000 to apprehend him.
“I am stranded because I can’t afford all the money the police are demanding to do their job,” Busayo lamented.
The court document provided to SaharaReporters states, “The application made by the applicant for the reversal of the sum of N610,000.00, which was fraudulently transferred from the applicant’s account… is hereby granted as prayed.” It further ordered that the funds be retrieved and any accounts linked to the fraudster’s BVN be restricted until the total sum is recovered.
Ultimately, Busayo managed to track down the scammer with the help of a friend.
