On October 27, co-founders Raad Aswani and George Oladipupo Younes officially kicked off their ambitious vision with the inaugural AFC 001 event held at the Velodrome, National Stadium, Abuja. This landmark occasion was sanctioned by the Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF), marking a significant milestone for the sport in Nigeria.
Ambassador Henry George, President of NMMAF, expressed strong support for the initiative. “The AFC represents the future of MMA in Nigeria, and we’re excited to back this journey,” he stated.
The event drew a sizeable crowd, showcasing over 20 fighters competing in 11 exhilarating bouts. Athletes from across the continent, including Nigeria’s Jeb Philemon and Believe Ohaioe, Cameroon’s Ayinde Octave, and Abdul Razak from Burkina Faso, demonstrated their skills and passion, embodying the AFC’s mission to unite African fighters and inspire a new generation of MMA fans.
Distinguished guests, including Ambassador Mary Onyali, who represented former Sports Minister Sunday Dare, were left in awe by the electrifying atmosphere and the fighters’ intensity. “I was completely captivated by the event,” said Onyali, expressing her optimism for the future of MMA in Nigeria.
For Aswani and Younes, this event was the culmination of a long-held dream. “We’ve always believed that Africa has the talent and drive to produce world-class fighters,” Younes noted.
The AFC’s founders are dedicated to building a strong presence in Abuja, bringing together Africa’s MMA talent through a series of events designed to elevate the sport across the continent.
With the successful launch of AFC 001, the championship is set to continue showcasing top fighters, high-level production, and an unmatched atmosphere, further solidifying Abuja’s status as the heart of African MMA.
The future of MMA in Nigeria and across Africa looks promising, with the AFC paving the way for a new era in the sport.
