Prominent Foreign Contractor Arrested for Allegedly Vandalizing Abuja Streetlights to Secure Contracts

Obuah explained that the contractor’s actions had disrupted several critical areas across the capital. Although he withheld the identity of the contractor, he confirmed that the suspect’s company is well-known and would be held accountable under the law.

He stated, “The FCT Minister has directed us to ensure Abuja is fully illuminated. I conducted a spot assessment with my team to track progress and identify issues.” Obuah went on to say that out of 21 maintenance areas, 18 were inspected, revealing widespread damage from vandalism. While expressing dissatisfaction with the scale of the destruction, Obuah praised his team for restoring lighting in critical zones like Yar’Adua Way and parts of Jabi.

He also noted that previous assumptions linked vandalism to scavengers and miscreants, but recent findings implicated high-level contractors. “We discovered today that some prominent contractors are sabotaging efforts by vandalizing streetlights,” he added. The detained foreign contractor reportedly possesses “full evidence” of involvement, and AMMC’s findings will be submitted to the FCT Minister to ensure prosecution.

Emphasizing the importance of public assets, Obuah stated, “We cannot allow government resources to be sabotaged. Those responsible, whether vandals or their buyers, must face the consequences.”
