The invitation was extended by IFES Country Director Seray Jah, who outlined the goals of the program. “On behalf of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), I am writing to invite you to participate in the 2024 IFES United States Election Program,” Jah’s letter stated. The USEP, held during each U.S. Presidential Election, brings together political and electoral leaders worldwide to explore key concepts impacting elections globally. The program seeks to enhance participants’ understanding of the U.S. decentralized election system, election dispute resolution, and the role of the Federal Election Commission in regulation.

During the program, participants will gain insights into the intricate relationships among campaign teams, election authorities, candidates, media, and voters. It will include visits to polling stations in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, showcasing diverse voting technologies and procedures. The experience will culminate in an election night event and a post-election debrief.

Barrister Abure is one of four prominent Nigerian political figures invited to attend the prestigious event. Representing the Labour Party (LP), a political group focused on social democracy and workers’ rights in Nigeria, Abure has been a strong advocate for economic justice, social equity, and anti-corruption. The Labour Party gained significant traction in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, driven by the presidential campaign of Peter Obi, which energized younger voters seeking reform and accountability.

Through his participation in IFES, Abure aims to bring back valuable insights to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic processes. The program will offer him practical exposure to election assistance and policymaking, particularly in ensuring fair and transparent elections.
