A 38-year-old PhD student and University of Benin staff member, Iyabonmwen McOliver, has publicly appealed to Dr. Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM), for deliverance from an ancestral deity.
She claims that the deity, associated with the Benin Kingdom, has manifested through both her and her mother, Mrs. Julie Ewemade McOliver. Iyabonmwen asserts that she has proof that Princess Edelayo Ewuare, daughter of Oba Ewuare I (who ruled between 1440-1470), and Princess Ughiwiyisi Eweka, have reincarnated through her and her mother.
However, as a Christian, she seeks to sever the connection with the deity, believing that only Dr. Olukoya can help them. She explained that while her family hails from Abba-Nsugbe in Anambra State, they have ties to the Benin royal family, as her paternal grandmother was the daughter of Oba Eweka II, making her grandfather the first grandson of Oba Eweka II.
Iyabonmwen clarified that her Christian faith does not align with the traditional beliefs associated with her ancestral lineage. “I am appealing to Dr. Olukoya to conduct deliverance for my mother and me because these princesses were linked to a certain deity, and I’ve been informed that I am the Queen Mother of Edo South East,” she said.
She further elaborated, saying, “Some princes and princesses left the kingdom and formed other tribes, even crossing the Niger. I cannot claim my ancestors’ practices, especially since they served gods connected to humans, and I no longer follow those deities.”
She emphasized the need for a spiritual separation from these ancestral deities, adding, “We are seeking deliverance from these spirits, and I believe only Olukoya can help us.”
During a visit to members of the Benin royal family and priests, Iyabonmwen claims they acknowledged her as a reincarnated princess. She also revealed that some churches, she believes, worship the same deity, even equating it to the Virgin Mary.
“I don’t want anything to do with this deity,” she stressed. “I seek the glory of Jesus Christ and want to be delivered from these ancestral ties. Whenever people see me, they say I resemble my great-grandmother, but I am a human being, not a spirit.”
