In a statement released in Akure, Abdulateef explained that despite personal appeals from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa urging him to stay in the APC, he decided to heed the growing pressure from his followers to switch allegiance.

He emphasized that farmers in Odigbo have become increasingly frustrated with the APC government, particularly over the alleged seizure and sale of their farmlands, which has caused unrest in the communities.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, Abdulateef said, “I appreciate Governor Aiyedatiwa for reaching out to me, and I did meet with him out of respect. He asked if the rumors of my defection were true, and I confirmed them. I explained that the ongoing hardship experienced by our people, including hunger and land disputes affecting farmers in Ore, led to my decision.

“My followers, who are deeply affected by the situation, called on me to leave the APC. When I asked them where to go, they suggested the PDP, and so we made the move. Last Saturday, I officially joined the PDP with over 12,000 of my supporters.”

Abdulateef also hinted at more defections to come, saying, “People from other areas like Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Irele, Ilaje, and Okitipupa have indicated their intention to follow suit.”

He expressed gratitude to the governor for his call but made it clear that his loyalty now lies with the PDP. Abdulateef also praised Agboola Ajayi, the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, for his past leadership, noting his humility and fairness during his time as deputy governor.

Following his defection, Abdulateef has been appointed as the Chairman of Mobilization for the PDP in the Ondo South Senatorial District.
