On Friday, the Lagos State government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced several “hardship relief measures” for the state. These measures include the reintroduction of Sunday markets with a 25% discount on food items and a free medical outreach.
Additional relief efforts consist of free delivery services for expectant mothers in hospitals and a 25% reduction in transport fares.
Governor Sanwo-Olu communicated these initiatives through the state’s Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, during an interview on TVC News. In the interview, Omotoso mentioned that the state had acknowledged the voices of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters.
When questioned about whether these decisions were a temporary response to the ongoing nationwide hunger protest, Omotoso clarified that these relief measures had been in place prior to the protest announcement.
Omotoso explained, “Millions of Lagosians benefited from the 25% discount on food items, which is why it’s so popular and in demand for a return. Besides that, we’ve implemented many initiatives in Lagos, which is why many of our young people didn’t join the protest. For instance, just the day before yesterday, thousands of graduates from our vocational centers received equipment to start their own businesses. These individuals are less likely to protest because they see the support they’re receiving.”
Regarding the lessons learned from the two-day hunger protest, which is scheduled to continue for another eight days, Omotoso stated, “A key takeaway is the importance of continuous communication and the recognition that violence benefits no one. While chaos can instigate conflict, it cannot resolve it. We urge protesters to return home now. They have conducted themselves peacefully, but it’s time to sit down and address the issues at hand. Everyone understands the concerns, and now we need to return to the drawing board to find common ground and solutions.”
