The ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to unfold as factional Acting National Chairman Ahmed Mohammed has officially accepted his appointment in a letter addressed to party members.

Dated October 13, 2024, and made public by the suspended PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the letter expresses Mohammed’s gratitude for the support he has received since taking on the role. He emphasized the need for deep reflection regarding the party’s management and its role as a vibrant opposition in the current political climate.

In the letter, Mohammed stated, “The domestic events within our Party in the last few days call for deep reflection about the management of the PDP, especially at this crucial time in our nation, particularly as it relates to our role as an opposition party and general management as a Constitution-compliant organization in the true spirit of the mission and vision of our founding fathers which are equity, fairness, and justice.”

He acknowledged the mixed performance of the party, admitting that internal conflicts have hindered its effectiveness as a viable opposition. “Regrettably, we must admit that we have not satisfactorily carried out the critical role expected of a virile opposition in a democracy,” he wrote.

Mohammed highlighted the importance of returning to the founding principles of the PDP and expressed his commitment to guiding the party in strict adherence to its Constitution. His immediate goal is to restore confidence among members by facilitating the long-overdue National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24, 2024. He also called upon the North Central Zone to nominate a replacement for former National Chairman Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.

Despite this appointment, the PDP faces additional challenges, as a recent court ruling has barred the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) from removing him as Acting National Chairman, further complicating the party’s leadership struggles.
