Finidi is set to lead the team in a competitive match for the first time in June, starting with the game against South Africa in Uyo. After consecutive draws in their initial matches, the team needs a win to reignite their campaign.
While much debate has centered on the tactics that will best serve the team, Finidi emphasized that tactics alone won’t suffice for victories in these crucial games.
“Every formation depends on the players and what they can bring to each game,” he told Afrik Foot. “Our job is to motivate the players and ensure they are physically fit. Tactics don’t really matter because in football, regardless of the strategy, you need to both attack and defend. If you can do that effectively, you have a strong chance of winning.”
“If you attack well and maintain a proper balance to defend, you increase your chances of winning. The formation itself isn’t the main issue. You can’t attack without defending. Once you balance attack and defense, you’re set.”
“Whether it’s 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, the players are familiar with these setups, especially from their experience in Europe. We won’t introduce anything strange or new. It’s about making them understand the plan and asking for their commitment. The rest is up to the players’ performance on the field, which will determine the result,” Finidi added.
