Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has implored the 2000 retirees who got their contributory pension worth about N4.46b on Thursday not to donate it to churches, mosques, or religious groups....Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Speaking at the 105 batches of retirement bond certificate presentation ceremony to retirees, Sanwo-Olu stated that the payment of the pension is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State government to its retirees and celebrates their years of dedicated service to the beloved state.
“This is not meant to solve all family problems. It is about you, what you have earned and worked for,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“When they say they want to build church or mosque and ask you to come out to pledge N3m. Don’t do that. God will give you the wisdom to act, Sanwo-Olu has done his part o.
“Today, we mark the 105th Retirement Bond Certificate presentation, a historic milestone as we transition into a new era of Pension Administration called “Pay-As You-Go.” From now on, all retirees of the State Government will be paid as they retire, provided all procedures and approvals have been completed before retirement,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“We have strategically prioritized clearing all backlogs of Accrued Rights payments to ensure our retirees enjoy dignity and financial stability after retirement. This commitment extends to the welfare of both current and former members of our workforce, recognizing their unblemished careers in the State Public Service.”
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that since the inception of the Contributory Pension Scheme, the state government has paid N141.2b to 35,191 retirees.
“Under this administration alone, we have paid N59.7b to 17,039 retirees, making Lagos State a top performer in pension payments. Today, I am pleased to announce that another 2,000 retirees will receive bond certificates worth a total of N4.46b. These funds, along with their monthly contributions, have already been remitted into their respective Retirement Savings Accounts with the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).
“In addition to financial entitlements, the Lagos State government, through the Lagos State Health Management Agency, has launched a Health Insurance Scheme tailored specifically for our retirees. This scheme will provide access to a wide range of medical services, from routine check-ups to specialized treatments.
“This initiative underscores our commitment to the well-being of our retirees, ensuring that you receive not only what is due to you statutorily but also additional support and assistance to enhance your lives in retirement.”
Speaking at the ceremony, the Director General of Lagos State Pension Commission, Mr Babalola Obilana, said the ceremony would not have been possible without the support and cooperation of stakeholders and Sanwo-Olu.
“Today, the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will present another set of 2,000 retirees with a total sum of N4,461,659,536.82, being their past service benefits prior to the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in 2007,” Obilana said.
“Today’s ceremony would not have been possible without the support and cooperation of various stakeholders. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the present administration under the leadership of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for their continuous support and commitment to the welfare of our retirees.” ...Click Here To Continue Reading>>

A financial expert, Mr Fasasi Atanda, has expressed concern over the recent push by the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, to mandate the registration for all ‘Point of Sale’, POS, agents in the country.
Atanda, the National President, Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja that the directive would affect small businesses in the country.
According to him, POS agents have become a crucial part of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, particularly in underserved areas, where traditional banking services are scarce.
He said these agents facilitate financial transactions and provide vital services to communities that would otherwise be excluded from the formal financial system.
Atanda said the CAC’s mandate had been criticised as redundant and burdensome because the POS agents were already regulated through financial institutions, with their data profiled by entities like MoniePoint.
“Before a POS can be issued, agents must provide their personal and business details, which are stored in a database maintained by the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS).
“This existing regulatory framework ensures that POS agents are already monitored and accountable.
“The new mandate from CAC, however, requires POS agents to register their businesses with the commission, a move seen as an unnecessary duplication of efforts.
“Critics argue that the mandate does not effectively address fraud concerns, which are cited as the primary reason for the registration requirement.
“Instead, it imposes additional financial and administrative burdens on small business owners, many of whom operate on thin margins,’’ he said.
According to Atanda, POS agents, represented by AMMBAN associations, have taken legal action to challenge the mandate.
“They argue that the CAC’s policy is a misplaced priority that fails to recognise the existing regulatory frameworks in place.
“The association contends that the policy unfairly targets their members and imposes unnecessary costs and bureaucratic hurdles that can drive many small agents out of business.
“ The POS and FinTech sectors have been among the most dynamic and rapidly growing parts of Nigeria’s economy, attracting significant foreign direct investment and creating millions of jobs.
“Policies that stifle this growth can have far-reaching consequences for economic development and financial inclusion,’’ Atanda said.
He, therefore, called on policymakers to engage stakeholders in decision-making that would support innovation, growth and guard against fraud.
“By working collaboratively, regulators and industry participants can find solutions that balance oversights with the need to foster a thriving and inclusive financial sector,’’ Atanda said.

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, under the umbrella of the Edo State PDP Youth League, EPYL, have demanded sanctions for the party’s National Vice Chairman in the South South region, Chief Dan Orbih over alleged anti-party activities.
Secretary General of the group, Abuókhae Shadrack Omoruyi, on Monday, urged the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party to immediately summon Orbih and sanction him for working against PDP’s interests in the forthcoming Edo State governorship election.
He described Orbih’s celebration over the erroneous misinterpretation of an Abuja Federal Court ruling on the status of the PDP standard bearer, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, as a total defiance to the PDP constitution.
Omoruyi said, “Chief Dan Orbih has also been seen publicly campaigning against our Party and candidate in total defilement of the demand of his office as nation officer of Party in charge of the South South.
“Dan Orbih’s action amounts to a reckless violation of Section 58 (1) (a) (b) (f) and (j) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017). He has clearly and publicly demonstrated that he is not working in the interest of our Party and as such cannot in good conscience continue to hold office as National Vice Chairman (South-South).
“The Edo State PDP Youth League therefore demands that the Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum-led National Working Committee preserve the integrity of the Party by immediately summoning Chief Dan Orbih, to face the National Disciplinary Committee pursuant to the express provision of Section 57 (1) and (3) of the PDP Constitution for this very weighty issue.”

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized cartons of aphrodisiac products and sex enhancement drugs worth N12 million in Sokoto State.
NAFDAC Coordinator in the state, Mr Garba Adamu, on Monday said that the agency’s patrol team made the seizures during routine patrol operations across markets in Sokoto and environs.
Adamu explained that the products were unregistered, highly unsafe due to dangerous ingredients used in the preparations, and an eyesore because of the blatant use of pornographic pictures on the packages.
He appealed to the public to desist from buying such products from unlicensed premises and only patronize registered and safe products from licensed outlets.
”We also call on the general public to always report hawkers and dealers of such products to NAFDAC, as well as report any adverse reactions they may get from taking such products or any other regulated products.
“Some marketers are in the habit of dumping expired or about-to-expire products in markets in Sokoto and environs, while some are taken to border markets and rural areas for consumption,” he said.
The coordinator cautioned traders against selling adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered and expired goods to the public, reiterating that NAFDAC would continue the enforcement at all the times.
According to him, the operation was also extended to the agrochemicals and cosmetics stores, part of the agency’s efforts to ensure that quality and right products were in circulation in the markets.
He urged Nigerians to always check the NAFDAC registration levels as well as the manufacturing and expiry dates of items before using them.
Adamu commended sister agencies, law enforcement agencies, traders’ associations, individuals and groups for their supports to NAFDAC toward safeguarding public health.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has filed an appeal challenging the judgement by the Federal High Court, which acquitted Abiodun Agbele, an associate of the former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and three others, in the N1.2bn money laundering charge brought against them by the commission.
In a notice, the commission faulted Justice Nnamdi Dimgba’s ruling, which stated that Agbele, Sylvan Mcnamara Limited, De Privateer Limited, and Spotless Investment Limited do not have a case to answer.
The defendants are standing trial on a 24-count amended charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N1.219 billion.
The N1.2bn is said to be part of the sum of N4.7 billion belonging to the Federal Government and allegedly transferred from an account associated with the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, in the Central Bank of Nigeria.
However, in June, Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court Abuja upheld the no case submission application filed by the defendants.
In the notice of appeal, the EFCC, through its prosecuting counsel, Senior Advocate of Wahab Shittu, listed 17 grounds of appeal and sought two reliefs from the Court of Appeal.
First, it sought an order allowing the appeal set aside the ruling of Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, and in its place holding that the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents have a case to answer on several counts of the amended charge.
The commission also sought an order directing the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents to enter into their defence before the trial court.
The EFCC expressed its dissatisfaction with the whole decision of the lower court June 21 ruling.
The commission said there is overwhelming evidence that N1.219 million from the account of the National Security Adviser, NSA, of Nigeria domiciled with CBN and earmarked for security purposes and paid into the account of the 2nd respondent by the office of the NSA was unlawfully diverted by the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents to fund Fayose’s governorship election.
It said that the “trial court erred in law in using the ongoing proceedings before another court of competent jurisdiction to determine the merits of the proceedings before the trial court.”
