The Military High Command confirmed this on Friday, stating that troops have been deployed to maintain order and stability amidst ongoing demonstrations.
On the eve of the protest, at around 8 PM on July 31, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the North East. A female suicide bomber detonated her explosive vest in Kawuri Village, located in Konduga Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State.
This horrific act resulted in the loss of 17 civilian lives, with several others injured and currently receiving treatment in hospitals. Despite this setback, the military continues its operations, focusing on achieving greater security in the North East, North West, North Central, and South East regions of the nation.
MILITARY Operations And Achievements In July
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, outlined the military’ s accomplishments throughout July during a press briefing on Friday. Troops neutralized 572 terrorists, apprehended 790 suspected terrorists and criminals, and rescued 479 kidnapped hostages.
The month also saw the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition, including 232 AK47 rifles, 93 locally fabricated guns, 82 Dane guns, and thousands of rounds of various calibers.
In their fight against oil theft, troops denied the illegal extraction and sale of crude oil valued at over 3 billion Naira. This included the seizure of 3, 650, 080 liters of stolen crude oil, 625, 518 liters of illegally refined automotive gas oil (AGO), 450 liters of dual- purpose kerosene (DPK), and 1, 230 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS).
DETAILED Operations In The North East
In the North East, Operation Hadin Kai has been particularly active. Troops neutralized 40 terrorists, arrested 47 suspects, and rescued 18 kidnapped hostages. They also recovered various weapons and ammunition, including PKT guns, QJC guns, AGLs, MK 4 rifles, and substantial sums of money.
Significant surrenders have been recorded as well. On July 24, 197 suspected Boko Haram (BH) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and their family members surrendered in Bama, Gwoza, and Dikwa LGAs.
Additional surrenders followed on July 26 and 30, with key fighters turning themselves in. Between July 24 and 30, a total of 1, 100 terrorists, including 164 adult males, 315 adult females, and 621 children, surrendered to troops.
NORTH Central Operations
In the North Central region, troops of Operation Safe Haven neutralized 14 insurgents, arrested 61 violent extremists, and rescued 19 kidnapped hostages. They also seized a variety of weapons, including GPMG, RPG tubes, FN rifles, fabricated pistols, Dane guns, and significant amounts of ammunition.
On July 24, troops intercepted and arrested seven suspected illegal miners in Jos North LGA of Plateau State. Additional arrests were made on July 30 and August 1 in Mangu and Lere LGAs, leading to the recovery of more weapons and ammunition.
NORTH West Operations
Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji have been active in the North West, neutralizing 13 terrorists, arresting 23 suspects, and rescuing 69 kidnapped hostages. They recovered AK47 rifles, Dane guns, ammunition, and motorcycles.
Notable operations included an airstrike on the enclave of a terrorist kingpin in Batsari LGA of Katsina State, resulting in significant casualties among the terrorists and the rescue of three hostages.
OPERATIONS In The Niger Delta
In the Niger Delta, troops of Operation Delta Safe focused on combating oil theft and other criminal activities. They rescued four kidnapped hostages, apprehended 13 suspects, and seized stolen crude oil and illegally refined AGO. The military also destroyed numerous illegal refining sites and recovered various equipment used in oil theft operations.
SOUTH East Operations
In the South East, troops of Operation Udoka neutralized four terrorists, arrested 17 violent extremists, and rescued five kidnapped hostages. Operations included the arrest of a notorious gang leader in Ikom LGA of Cross River State and the recovery of locally fabricated weapons.
