His fellow countryman and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped in temporarily as interim manager, while the club thrash out a deal with Sporting CP for their boss Ruben Amorim to replace Ten Hag.

Despite receiving a vote of confidence from new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS in the summer in the Erik ten Hag reportedly feels deeply let down by three key players following his dismissal from Manchester United.

The Dutchman’s time at Old Trafford ended on Monday after 18 turbulent months, marked by the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish and a disappointing start to the current season. Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over as interim manager, while the club negotiates with Sporting CP for their manager, Ruben Amorim, to take the helm.

Despite receiving a summer contract extension and support from new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, United’s board had been exploring alternative managers, almost parting ways with Ten Hag before now.

According to *The Mirror*, Ten Hag felt let down by Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and Antony, who he believes contributed significantly to his struggles. Rashford, who has netted only once this season, has struggled to replicate his previous form. Last season’s league tally of seven goals fell short of the 17 he scored during Ten Hag’s first year in charge.

Casemiro, meanwhile, has faced mounting criticism, with some speculating he might join the Saudi Pro League next summer. The Brazilian midfielder has appeared increasingly outpaced in the Premier League, highlighted by his underwhelming performance against Liverpool, which led to his substitution in favor of newcomer Manuel Ugarte.

Antony, whom Ten Hag brought over from Ajax for £86 million, has also struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, adding to the scrutiny over the club’s near-£600 million spending spree under the former manager.

Bruno Fernandes, appointed captain by Ten Hag, has also been criticized for recent underwhelming performances and a pair of red cards—one later overturned—against Tottenham and Porto.
