The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that Governor Ademola Adeleke is plotting to use the judiciary to arrest newly inaugurated executives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC claimed the governor was working with a High Court judge to obtain arrest warrants for the state chairman of the NURTW and chairmen of its local government chapters.
According to the APC, the alleged plan is aimed at intimidating and remanding the transport union leaders before the governorship poll.
The party further alleged that the state government intends to secure the warrants through what it described as politically motivated charges and by seeking substituted service instead of serving the affected individuals personally.
The APC claimed the matter had already been assigned hearing dates, including one scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026, and alleged that the move was designed to create a basis for the detention of the union executives.
The party also accused Governor Adeleke of laying the groundwork for the alleged action during a political rally in Osogbo on Monday, where he described himself as the Chief Security Officer of the state and criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Governor Gboyega Oyetola.
According to the APC, the alleged arrangement involved certain Accord Party members and a High Court judge during a meeting held in Osogbo on Tuesday. However, the party said it was still investigating the identity of the judicial officer allegedly involved.
The APC urged the Osun State Judiciary to resist any attempt to use the courts as instruments for political persecution, warning that such actions could damage the credibility of the judicial system.
“It won’t be dignifying for the judiciary to allow its name to be dragged in the mud because of politics,” the statement said.
The opposition party questioned the urgency of the alleged legal proceedings, noting that the judiciary is currently on vacation.
The APC further called on the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies to closely monitor the political situation in Osun State and ensure peace before, during and after the governorship election.
The party also alleged that Governor Adeleke’s comments at the Osogbo rally referenced Nigeria’s political crisis of 1983, urging security agencies to take note of what it described as inflammatory remarks.
