Governor, NEMSA move to ensure standardization of electrical installations

The Ondo State Government and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) have initiated efforts to ensure the standardization, inspection, and testing of electrical equipment and materials within the state. This was among the resolutions reached during a virtual meeting held on Monday between officials from NEMSA and the Ondo State Government. The meeting was chaired by NEMSA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Aliyu Tukur Tahir, who also serves as the Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation (CEIF).

In a press release issued by NEMSA’s Head of Communications and Protocol, Mrs. Ama Umorem, the agency outlined the key discussions from the meeting. The Ondo State delegation was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Barrister Olatunji Light.

During the meeting, Engr. Tahir welcomed the Ondo State representatives, emphasizing the importance of the partnership in ensuring the safety of lives and property in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). He highlighted that the collaboration between NEMSA and the Ondo State Government would promote standardization and safety across the electricity sector.

Barrister Olatunji Light, in his remarks, conveyed the appreciation of the state governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to NEMSA for facilitating the meeting. He noted that the collaboration would further enhance efforts to protect lives and property in the state. Light also mentioned that Ondo State was already working with other federal agencies on similar initiatives and expressed a willingness to formalize the partnership with NEMSA through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MOU, he suggested, could serve as a model for other states.

The meeting concluded with the decision to establish a joint team comprising members from both NEMSA and the Ondo State Government. This team will identify potential areas for collaboration and work towards ensuring smooth operations in the power sector.

NEMSA, established under the NEMSA Act of 2015 (now the Electricity Act 2023), is tasked with enforcing technical standards, conducting inspections, testing, and certifying all categories of electrical installations and equipment. This is aimed at ensuring the safe and reliable supply of electricity across the country, while safeguarding lives and property in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
