In a post shared on his official X handle, Obi emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to the rule of law in addressing the issue. He noted that while the allegations are serious, there is a lack of clarity regarding whether these accusations pertain to Ajaero’s personal conduct or his role as the leader of the NLC.
“The infractions listed on the letter of invitation circulating on social media are weighty, and there is no clarity on whether these are being attributed to personal conduct or responsibilities related to Mr. Ajaero’s position as the leader of the NLC,” Obi stated.
He further cautioned that the government’s approach could have significant implications, particularly given the sensitive position Ajaero holds as a leader of a powerful labor union. Obi warned against any autocratic attempts to undermine the labor movement, which he described as a potential opposition force.
“While invitations like the one to Ajaero are expected, it is crucial that the rule of law and the laws of evidence are strictly observed. Labour must remain steadfast in its strengths to uphold democratic order,” Obi added.
The Labour Party leader’s comments come at a time of heightened tension between the government and labor unions, as the NLC continues to play a pivotal role in advocating for the rights of Nigerian workers amid ongoing economic challenges.
