Arsenal had been considering adding a new striker and were heavily linked with Isak, who scored 21 Premier League goals last season and was seen by many as a perfect fit for the Gunners.
However, Arsenal ultimately chose not to pursue a new striker, opting instead to trust Kai Havertz in the false nine role for the current season.
“I’m a big fan of this lad,” Merson said on Sky Sports when discussing Isak.
“I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t make a bigger effort to sign him over the summer. I think he was the missing piece for Arsenal.”
