According to the FG, the new wage is essential to address the current economic challenges, stressing that no Nigerian worker, whether in the public or private sector, should earn less than the mandated amount.
This was stated by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, held in Ikeja, Lagos. Represented by the Director of Employment and Wages, John Nyamali, Abubakar emphasized, “The minimum wage is now law, and any employer paying less than N70,000 is committing a punishable offense.”
He further added that private employment agencies must ensure that in any contract they secure, their workers receive at least the minimum wage, stating, “The least paid worker in Nigeria should earn N70,000, after all deductions. Non-compliance is a jailable offense, and the government is fully committed to enforcing this law.”
Speaking at the event, Funmilayo Sessi, Chairperson of the NLC, Lagos State Council, acknowledged the severe economic hardships, which have made current earnings insufficient. She called on private employers to implement the N70,000 minimum wage promptly, stating, “Given the economic realities, N70,000 is inadequate. Once the consequential adjustments are finalized, all private agencies should ensure their workers are paid accordingly.”
