The Appeal Court judgment reinstating Martins Amaewhule and other pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly has divided the Rivers APC on Thursday....Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the Rivers State APC Caretaker Committee and an ally of Wike, welcomed the judgment, stating that justice had been served. “The grey areas that have led Rivers into a litany of litigation have been sorted out. Justice was served. The reasoning adduced by the venerated Justice of the Court of Appeal, under which stood the bedrock of their unanimous decision, is very sound and unimpeachable,” Okocha commented.
In contrast, the camp loyal to former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, disagreed. APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Darlington Nwauju, emphasized that the judgment did not change the fact that the 25 pro-Wike lawmakers had defected from the PDP to the APC. Nwauju urged the parties to respect the rule of law and consider approaching the Supreme Court if necessary. “We urge parties in dispute to respect the path of the rule of law and constitutionality and approach the highest court if they deem it expedient,” he said.
Nwauju also condemned the protest on June 25, 2024, during which an improvised explosive device was detonated, describing it as “infantile, illogical, and grossly irresponsible.” He added, “Today’s ruling does not vitiate the fact that the 27 Assemblymen did defect from the PDP to the APC.”
The state government remained silent on the judgment, with the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, not responding to calls or messages seeking comment. The state Chairman of the PDP, Aaron Chukwuemeka, was also unavailable for comment.
However, the National Legal Adviser of the APC, Prof. Abdulkareem Kana, praised the appeal court’s verdict, noting that it was not surprising. Kana explained the distinction between political and legal defection, highlighting the procedural steps required for a legitimate defection. “What people don’t understand is that there is a political defection and there is a legal defection. A person may politically defect and may not legally do so,” he said. He questioned the procedural validity of the lawmakers’ defection, emphasizing the need for formal resignation and acceptance processes. Kana pointed out that the parliamentarians must write to the speaker to indicate their interest in defecting, but in this case, the speaker was among those defecting.

Atiku, Osinbajo, El-Rufai, others should unite to rescue Nigeria from APC, Tinubu...Click Here To Continue Reading>>
The immediate past National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Salihu Lukman, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Labour Party Peter Obi, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and former governors of Kano and Kaduna states, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai, to unite to rescue the country from APC and President Bola Tinubu.
Lukman, in a statement on Sunday, said political leaders must recognise that rescuing Nigeria from its current slippery slope is about teamwork and partnership.
He stressed that building the kind of united front capable of moving Nigeria’s democracy forward required selflessness on the part of Nigerian political leaders.
The former APC chieftain said: “The requirement for high acceptability from all sections of the country should humble all political leaders in the country, especially Alh. Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi, not to exploit the need for such a united front by imposing their presidential ambitions.
“In the same vein, other APC leaders such as Prof. Osinbajo, Chief Amaechi, Dr. Fayemi, Mal. El-Rufai, Sen. Amosun, etc. (APC political orphans) who in one way or another have ambitions to become Nigeria’s president must bury such ambitions, at least not during the negotiation to form the united political front.”
Lukman also called on former governors, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, Kayode Fayemi and Ibikunle Amosun, among other political leaders, to team up to defeat the ruling party.
He added: “If APC and President Asiwaju Tinubu are to have any considerable electoral strength in 2027, it will be on account of the current division, which characterises Nigerian politics and makes it impossible for any form of cooperation by political leaders.
“Absence of cooperation among political leaders is responsible for the rising incidences of bad governance in the country and is eroding the basis of Nigerian nationhood. Once democracy cannot respond to challenges facing citizens, Nigeria as a sovereign entity will be irrelevant and questionable.”

In the midst of the ongoing political feud between former Governor of the state, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and his successor, Senator Uba Sani, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Kaduna State yesterday declared support for the governor....Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Both Sani and el-Rufai have been having a frosty relationship leading to the recent probe of the el-Rufai administration by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
The Kaduna APC stakeholders made their stand known during the Kaduna State APC Executive Committee meeting held at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Hall, Murtala Muhammad Square, Kaduna, where party chieftains passed a vote of confidence on the governor.
The meeting had in attendance the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, APC chairman in Kaduna State, Air Commodore Emmanuel Jekada (rtd); former governor of the state, Ramalan Yero; APC House of Reps members from Kaduna State, Hon. Muktar Chawai, Hon. Bashir Zubairu, Hon. Ahmed Mannir, and Hon. Bello El-rufai, and the Speaker, Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Liman Dahiru, alongside all the APC members in the State House of Assembly, among others.
The Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Speaker, Musa Krishi in a statement issued yesterday said the APC Deputy Vice Chairman, North West, Hon. Datti Garba Muhammad, moved a motion for a vote of confidence on Sani, and was seconded by a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Barde.
He added that the motion was unanimously endorsed by the Kaduna APC leaders at the meeting.
He said: “APC Deputy Vice Chairman, North West, Hon. Datti Garba Muhammad, moved a motion for a vote of confidence on Governor Uba Sani, which was seconded by Hon. Yakubu Barde, a former House of Reps member for Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency. The motion was unanimously endorsed by the Kaduna APC leaders at the meeting.”
Speaking, Abbas expressed optimism that the future of the APC in Kaduna was bright considering the caliber of people uniting within the state’s chapter of the party.
He assured the party faithful in the state that there would be no crack between him and Sani until the end of the governor’s reign in office.
Abbas reiterated his stance that through thick and thin, he would continue to give maximum support to Sani, adding that only Allah knows the strength of the relationship between him and the governor.
The Speaker also urged the governor not to give room for any crack between them, noting that the good relationship they enjoy would bring more developments and stability to Kaduna State.
While congratulating Sani for his successful one year in office, Abbas commended the governor for being relentless in uniting all ethnic and religious groups in the state.
Speaking on the ongoing constitution amendment by the National Assembly, the Speaker called on the people of Kaduna State and the six other North Western states to study the constitution and identify areas of review.
He noted that a platform would be provided for people to give their inputs in the build up to the final process.
On his part, Sani applauded the Speaker for recording remarkable achievements in his first year in office as Speaker, saying the House of Representatives was the most complex institution to lead in the country.
The governor assured members of the APC in the state that his government, jointly with the Abbas, would do everything possible to carry every member of the party along.

The lingering economic hardship resulting from ongoing reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and floating of the naira has given rise to palpable fear that Nigerians may vote out Tinubu in 2027.
But the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the ruling party, Nze Chidi Duru, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, said the ongoing reforms had to come into play to steady the sinking ship of the economy.
He said, “Our party has always recognised the fact that the current challenging economic environment has not in any way got better. When Mr President took over, he asked Nigerians not to pity him. It is an office that he craved and worked hard for before offering himself to provide leadership to Nigeria.
“What gives confidence is that Mr President is very much aware of the expectations of the person on the street. The minimum expectation will be that they need to be comfortable. So, the discussion around 2027 (election) is not out of place. In the life of a country, four years is like yesterday.
“Let me say every political office holder or politician knows that the first date in office is key because the citizens who elected you into office and those who did not elect you will begin to track your performance as a result of that. They can then decide whether or not to re-elect you.
“Concerning whether we will be re-elected, as a democrat and my personal view, we have always canvassed that unless His Excellency President Bola Tinubu will not contest, the APC government is bound to be represented by our candidate in 2027 to fly the flag for the simple reason that I want to bring up. And, of course, there is the incumbency factor.”

In a live address from the state house, Ruto said the government will present a proposal to the national assembly to approve massive expenditure cuts after the withdrawal of the 2024 finance bill.
“Over the last few days, our treasury team has been assessing the adverse impact of either reducing the budget by the entire Sh346 billion or borrowing the full amount,” he stated on Friday.
“We have since struck a middle ground and will be proposing to the National Assembly a budget cut of Sh177 billion and borrow the difference. The additional borrowing will increase our fiscal deficit from 3.3 per cent to 4.6 per cent and will be used to protect the funding of critical government services,” President Ruto stated.
President Ruto listed several critical government initiatives that will receive continued funding, including the hiring of medical interns, support for dairy farmers, road infrastructure projects, fertilizer subsidies, and settlements of debts owed to farmers in various sectors.
In addition to the financial adjustments, President Ruto also removed budgets for the offices of the first lady, and the second lady.
Dissolution of 47 State Corporations to eliminate overlapping functions and reduce operational costs.
Suspension of filling Chief Administrative Secretaries positions.
50 per cent reduction in government advisors within the public service.
Removal of budget lines for offices of First Lady, spouses of Deputy President, and Prime Cabinet Secretary.
Suspension of non-essential travel and participation in public contributions by state and public officers.
“These measures are part of our commitment to enhance efficiency and transparency in serving the people of Kenya,” President Ruto affirmed.

In a statement made available to journalists in Awka, Friday, Ogene said the election told vivid tales of hope for the opposition, and competence and integrity of the electoral umpires in the UK, in a manner that elicits public confidence and trust in the electoral process.
“Unlike what was witnessed in Nigeria in the last general elections, the process in UK was free of glitches, as about 40 million voters took part. Polls closed around 10 pm Thursday and by daybreak, the results were out.
“There was no judicial ambush, as immediate transition took place to the admiration of all lovers of democracy and free and fair elections.
“If we must practice democracy, we must also love, copy and abide by the transparency and accountability of democratic institutions in nations of the world that allow the rule of law and democratic principles to thrive.
“In deed, one of the potent lessons of the British elections is the fact that, the concept of ‘snatch it, grab it, and run away with it,’ has no place in modern democratic practice,” he said.
Relating the development in the UK to the 2027 election in Nigeria, Ogene said: “I urge the Nigerian Labour Party to draw inspiration from its British counterparts, close ranks, rally the people, and prepare to take the reins of power in 2027.
“Let us work together to build a better future for our nation, guided by the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability.”
Ogene congratulated Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party in Britain, for his party’s victory over the outgoing UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party, in what has been described as the most emphatic election victory by any British political party this century.
The opposition Labour Party won a huge parliamentary majority in the UK general election, unseating the incumbent Conservatives after 14 years.
While the Labour Party got 412 seats, the incumbent Conservatives got just 121. ...Click Here To Continue Reading>>

Trump test for American democracy

The Evolving Landscape of American Democracy...Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Growing up, I always heard that everything about the United States was exemplary for the rest of the world. “In America” was a frequent reference in public discourse, highlighting its democracy, constitutionalism, federalism, and public accountability. The U.S. was seen as a place where every detail of a public official’s life was scrutinized by the media and the public, and where accusations of impropriety led to immediate resignation or withdrawal from a race.
One memorable example was Senator Gary Hart, a frontrunner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. Rumors of an extramarital affair with Donna Rice led to relentless media scrutiny, forcing Hart to withdraw despite his denials and lack of concrete evidence. This incident, even to a politically naive teenager, underscored that ethics were paramount in American politics.
Today, American democracy faces challenges, with President Donald Trump’s tenure being one of the most significant tests in recent history. As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the world is watching how America handles what I call the “Trump Test,” where a non-conformist disrupts established democratic norms. Every system faces crises, and the U.S. is no exception.
Complicating the situation is President Joe Biden’s apparent health decline. At 81, he would be 82 at the start of a second term and 86 at its end. Concerns about his physical and mental health have been amplified by his performance in debates, causing alarm among his supporters. Despite this, Biden remains in the race, seemingly prioritizing personal ambition over public good, a trait often criticized in African leaders who refuse to step down.
Trump’s resurgence in the polls is concerning, not due to political bias but because of the implications for global democracies. Many developing nations look up to the U.S. for democratic inspiration. Previously, “in America” signified excellence. Now, it sometimes justifies poor practices elsewhere. Trump embodies traits often seen in African politicians: lack of accountability, emotional voter manipulation, and grandstanding.
Trump’s rise was marked by controversial statements and actions, yet he won the presidency in 2016. His rhetoric and behavior, including calling COVID-19 “Kung Flu” and suggesting disinfectant ingestion as treatment, shocked many. Despite accusations and legal issues, including fraud and paying hush money, Trump remains a strong candidate, testing the boundaries of American democracy.
The January 6, 2021, attack on Congress by Trump supporters highlighted the dangers of undermining democratic norms. This event was reminiscent of authoritarian tactics seen in developing countries. Despite facing criminal charges, Trump’s legal troubles do not bar him from running for president again, further challenging traditional democratic principles.
The potential re-election of Trump poses a threat not only to American democracy but also to global democratic standards. It risks providing dangerous precedents for leaders in developing nations, much like how Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro mimicked Trump’s tactics. The integrity of American democracy is crucial for global democratic health.
In essence, democracy worldwide faces a crisis of representation and accountability. Trump’s challenge is unique in its disregard for ethics and decency. As Nigeria and other nations strive to instill ethical leadership, the example set by Trump’s political survival could undermine these efforts, promoting a more Machiavellian approach to governance. ...Click Here To Continue Reading>>

Commitment to Equipping the Army
President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s efforts to provide the army with the necessary tools to fulfill their constitutional duty of protecting the nation. He announced the approval of Group Life Assurance payments for all army members who died in service and the procurement of attack helicopters and other essential equipment to enhance their combat efficiency.
Represented by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Tinubu stated, “As your Commander-In-Chief, my administration is committed to building a well-equipped and truly professional army that will remain the pride of the nation. We are committed to providing you with all that you need to enable you to fulfil your constitutional responsibilities.”
Professionalism and Preparedness
Tinubu expressed pride in the Nigerian Army’s display of equipment and professionalism during the celebration. He noted the importance of the army’s adaptability in response to the evolving global security landscape. “We live in a complex and ever-changing world, and our army must continue to evolve to meet the new challenges of the changing world,” he said.
He also highlighted the significance of lectures and brainstorming sessions held during the Army Day Celebration to better prepare for emerging security challenges. “As the world changes, our security architecture must also change to meet up with the new threats,” Tinubu added. He urged the army to ensure that Nigerians feel safe in their daily lives and to continue evolving strategies to prevent violent groups from disrupting peace.
Collaboration and Professional Conduct
The president called for the Nigerian Army to work closely with other security agencies and the public. He emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism in their actions against violent groups. “You must sustain the progress made so far and evolve strategies to ensure that violent groups do not overwhelm peaceful and law-abiding Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
He also encouraged the army to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects their professionalism, stating, “Finally, I would like to encourage you to continue to work closely with our sister services, other security agencies as well as your fellow countrymen and women. There is no doubt, that you represent the pride of the nation; an institution with history; an institution that has never failed Nigeria.”
Chief of Army Staff’s Remarks
Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, described the week-long celebration as successful and expressed gratitude to the President for his strategic guidance. He reaffirmed the army’s loyalty and commitment to defending Nigeria’s constitution.
“On behalf of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army, I want to reiterate our unalloyed loyalty and pledge our total commitment to the defence of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Lagbaja stated.
Grand Finale and Awards
The grand finale of the celebration saw attendance from dignitaries including Plateau State Governor Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, Taraba State Governor Agbus Kefas, and Chief of Defense Staff Christopher Musa. The event featured the commissioning of two military aircraft, a display of military vehicles, and the presentation of awards for outstanding service.
Philanthropist and Chairman of BUA Group, Abdusamad Rabiu, was notably recognized for his contributions, including a donation of N10 billion to the Security Support Fund, with N2 billion allocated to the Nigerian army. ...Click Here To Continue Reading>>
