The BBC reports that Gray had been embroiled in disputes over her salary, following revelations by the BBC’s political editor that she earned more than Sir Keir. Labour has confirmed that Ms Gray will be replaced by Morgan McSweeney, who previously served as Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister thanked Gray, who authored the report on parties held in Downing Street during the pandemic, for “all the support she has given me, both in opposition and government and her work to prepare us for government and get us started on our programme of change.”

He added, “Sue has played a vital role in strengthening our relations with the regions and nations. I am delighted that she will continue to support that work.”

Gray’s resignation comes amid speculation about her role and reports of a power struggle within Downing Street.
