According to SERAP, the children and other protesters were detained solely for peacefully exercising their human rights
. The organization called on Fagbemi and relevant law enforcement agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the human rights violations of the detained protesters and children, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure justice and remedies for the victims.
SERAP also urged Tinubu to direct Fagbemi and other authorities to ensure that the protesters, including the 32 malnourished children, receive immediate medical treatment due to their deteriorating health.
The letter, dated Saturday, November 2, 2024, was signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare.
Part of the letter reads: “Bringing charges against children and detaining them simply for peacefully exercising their human rights is not in line with the ‘best interests of the child.’
“The detention of the 32 malnourished children also violates their right to education. These children should be in school, not suffering in detention.
“The ill-treatment of the protesters, including these children, highlights the alarming conditions in Nigeria’s prisons, which continue to endanger lives.
“The ongoing arbitrary detention of the protesters fosters a climate of fear, discouraging other citizens from exercising their human rights, and creating a chilling effect.
“We would appreciate it if the recommended actions are taken within 48 hours of receiving or publishing this letter. If we do not receive a response by then, SERAP will consider taking legal action to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest.”
