The chain’s CEO announced that 9,000 Dollar General stores were set to be affected by the store’s measures against theft.

CEO Todd Vasos revealed in March that the company would take “decisive action” to tackle shrink, The U.S. Sun previously reported.
Shrink is an industry term describing stock that went missing either through theft or loss.
One of the CEO’s action plans was to change their self-checkout kiosks at thousands of stores across the country.
“We’ve made decisions based on that AI activity to pull out in 9,000 stores and go to that assisted-check stand,” the CEO said.
This decision angered Dollar General shopper Jordan Jamie Rey (@JordanJamieRey) who took their complaint to X, formerly Twitter.
“Local dollar general takes out the self-checkout to “save jobs” or whatever,” Rey wrote in the post.
Rey complained about the number of staff available at their store.
“There’s literally 1 cashier now, there’s no “jobs to save,” Rey added.
The Dollar General shopper also explained why they were a fan of self-checkouts
“Get with the times. it’s 2024,” Rey wrote.

CEO Vasos explained that most of the chain’s stores’ checkouts would be staff-operated.
He also added that these new hybrid kiosks would be “second or third options to reduce lines during high-volume times.”
Vasos’s plan included two other strategies to combat shrink.
Anti-theft measures rolled out by retailers
Retailers across the US and Canada have rolled out strategies designed to combat theft. The U.S. Sun has compiled a list of measures that have been implemented at stores.
- Locking items in cabinets.
- Security pegs.
- Security cameras.
- Signs warning about the impact of theft.
- Receipt scanners.
- Receipt checks.
- Carts with locking technology
His second change was to remove self-checkouts at some stores altogether.
“Over the first half of the year, we plan to completely remove self-checkout from more than 300 of our highest shrink stores,” he said.
His third change was to introduce a five-item limit at stores that still have self-checkouts.
“It’s going to make a world of difference” both to loyal customers and the retailer,” the CEO said.
The U.S. Sun has reached out to Dollar General for comment.
