In a statement released on Friday, October 18, 2024, and signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, the prominent cleric expressed grave concerns over the country’ s economic trajectory, which he described as ” hypertensive. ” Ayodele pointed to the persistent inflation and rising cost of living as clear indications that the current government has no viable solution to the economic challenges facing the nation.

His remarks came on the heels of recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showing that Nigeria’ s inflation rate surged to 32. 7 percent in September 2024.

This inflation spike followed the government’ s decision to remove fuel subsidies and allow the naira to float, which led to significant price increases for basic commodities, especially food.

” The Nigerian economy will continue to deteriorate unless there is a comprehensive reset, ” Primate Ayodele stated.
He warned that without significant intervention, the hardships faced by the population will only worsen, a situation that he believes the current administration is ill- equipped to handle.

” This government will only work, but they don’ t have a solution. Things will be getting difficult until they restart the economy again, ” Ayodele added.

Ayodele also expressed sympathy for ordinary Nigerians who are struggling to cope with the economic downturn.
He suggested that the government’ s failure to act could push the country further into an economic abyss, where citizens would face even more dire conditions.

It should be noted that the floating of the naira and the removal of fuel subsidies were among the most significant economic policies introduced by the Tinubu administration.

However, instead of alleviating the economic burden, these policies have been met with widespread criticism for exacerbating the financial strain on everyday Nigerians.

” Don’ t let it get to a state where people will be taking food from dustbins; we are in an economic embarrassment era. Nigeria’ s economy will be hypertensive, ” Ayodele warned.
