WHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe launched a legal dispute against his former employer, claiming he was owed €55m (£46m). Attempts to resolve the situation through a mediation were rejected by Mbappe on Wednesday, and the LFP has since ordered PSG to pay the France striker the three months’ salary and final third of a bonus payment that he is owed, per RMC Sport.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe’s spell at the Parc des Princes ended on a sour note, with the 25-year-old upset over broken promises. Losing him on a free transfer this past summer will have hurt PSG given his status as one of the world’s best players, and the €55m payout is added salt in the wound. However, they have already confirmed they do not intend to pay the money and will take further legal action.

In response to the LFP’s verdict, PSG issued a four-word message to Mbappe: “We are not paying.”

The French club told the AP, via ESPN: “In light of the limitations of the commission’s legal scope to take a complete decision on this matter, the matter must now be contested in another legal forum, to which Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to present all the facts over the coming months and year.”

They added: “As a matter of law and fact, the player has made clear, repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having been afforded unprecedented benefits by the club over seven years in Paris. And the club looks forward to these being upheld in the proper forum, if the player seeks to pursue this incomprehensibly reputationally damaging matter further, in due course.”
