Oyo blasts driver, vows action after truck damages newly fixed road...Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Oyo State Government has condemned the destruction of a portion of the newly rehabilitated Olusoji-WCCI Road, a few days after it was officially opened for public use.
This was made known in a statement on Sunday by the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency, Busoye Ogunlade in Ibadan, the state capital.
A viral video of the destroyed portion of the road had surfaced earlier on Friday.
Ogunlade said he was aware of the incident where a truck carrying over 60 tonnes of cement destroyed the portion after the driver lost control of the truck.
Ogunlade, who expressed disappointment at how the truck driver took to his heels after the destruction, described it as a cowardly act.
The chairman said, “The agency received a report on vandalism on the newly rehabilitated road, particularly the unfortunate incident of destruction of a part of the Olusoji-WCCI road by a truck driver, who is at large as we speak.
“The agency condemns in the strongest terms this ruthless destruction of the first phase of Olusoji-WCCI road, as a deliberate act of sabotage on a key link road that has immense socio-economic benefits to the state and indeed the entire nation.
“The road that was completed last week is one of the state’s projects intended to bridge the gap in the road infrastructure yearnings of the people of the area.”
He appreciated the residents of the area for their concern, assuring them that the destroyed portion of the road had been fixed almost immediately.
Ogunlade explained that a technical team was immediately deployed to inspect, evaluate and reinstate the damaged parts of the road, while the building where the truck offloaded the cement had been sealed.
The Chairman added that henceforth, the agency will ensure that perpetrators of such acts face the full wrath of the law.

The kidnapped journalists, identified as Abdulgafar Alabelewe of The Nation Newspaper and Abduraheem Aodu of Blueprint, were seized alongside their relatives in a terrifying raid.
According to eyewitness accounts and statements from the relatives of the abductees, the assailants infiltrated the community at approximately 10: 30 pm, unleashing a barrage of gunfire before forcibly taking their captives. The attack has left the community in a state of heightened fear and anxiety, as residents grapple with the trauma of the violent incursion.
The audacious nature of this assault underscores the persistent insecurity plaguing various parts of Kaduna State, particularly in the Chikun Local Government Area, which has frequently been a target of terrorist activities. The brazen nature of this attack, targeting high- profile individuals such as journalists, highlights the escalating threat posed by these criminal elements.
In the wake of the attack, security forces have been mobilized to track down the assailants and rescue the kidnapped individuals. Authorities have intensified their efforts, deploying personnel to comb the surrounding areas in a bid to locate the terrorists’ hideout and secure the safe return of the abducted journalists and their families. Despite these efforts, the whereabouts of the victims remain unknown, and the ordeal has further exacerbated concerns over the effectiveness of security measures in the region.
This incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various quarters, with journalists, media organizations, and civil society groups decrying the attack as an assault on press freedom and the safety of media practitioners.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a strong statement condemning the abduction and calling for the immediate release of their colleagues. They have urged the government to take decisive action to address the rampant insecurity and ensure the protection of journalists who often find themselves in the crosshairs of violent elements due to the nature of their work.
The attack on Danhonu community is not an isolated incident but rather part of a broader pattern of violence that has engulfed Kaduna State in recent years. The region has been plagued by a series of kidnappings, armed robberies, and terrorist attacks, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property. Communities have been left vulnerable, with residents living in constant fear of the next attack.
In conclusion, the recent terrorist attack on the Danhonu community has underscored the pressing need for enhanced security measures and a concerted effort to address the underlying issues contributing to the region’ s instability.

The bandits who murdered Dr. Tiri Gyan David, a senior lecturer, have reached out to his widow, demanding a ransom of N300 million in exchange for the release of their two abducted children.
David, who was the Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development, at the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA), was gunned down last week by bandits who abducted two of his children in Katsina State, northwest Nigeria.
SaharaReporters on July 2, 2024 reported the tragic incident and the abduction of the children.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at his residence in Yarima Quarters, Low-Cost Estate in the Dutsinma Local Government Area of the state.
However, a friend of the family told SaharaReporters on Sunday that the terrorists contacted the lecturer’s widow and demanded the sum of N300 million to free her abducted boys.
The source said the terrorists “called Dr. David’s widow in the early hours of Sunday and his younger brother answered the call”.
“They demanded N300 million and his widow replied in the background telling them that ‘you’ve killed the person who may have probably been able to get something for you guys,’” the source said.
“I’m a widow and not a working-class type, how do you expect me to raise that kind of ransom?” she was quoted to have asked.
It was gathered that after hearing her voice, the terrorist on the phone asked, “Are you the woman whose two boys are here with us?”
According to the source, they ended the call and promptly switched off their phone, cutting off all further communication.

Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, Special counsel for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has questioned why the IPOB leader has not been found guilty despite Nigerian government’s claims that he is guilty of terrorism-related charges....Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Kanu has been on trial since 2015.
Ejimakor explained that the trial is not a persecution rather than a prosecution.
Ejimakor made this known in an 18-minutes and 9 seconds video obtained by SaharaReporters on Sunday, stressing that the government knows that with the evidence available to it, Kanu’s conviction will be impossible.

— Sahara Reporters (@SaharaReporters) July 7, 2024
He said, “His trial was making its way slowly at Abuja with all the several amendments the government was bringing, they walked away from treasonable felony, insulting the president, importation of equipment and terrorism, and that’s how it happened seven times, seven amendments.
“If Kanu was guilty, why is it taking so long to bring him to trial between 2015 and today, which is eight years?
“So what is undergoing? He’s not really a judicial trial, it’s trial by ordeal, trial by fire, imprisonment before conviction. They just want to get out many years of jail time out of him as possible, because they know that with the evidence available, conviction will be impossible.
“And that was made worse by the extraordinary rendition which I took also as a civil violation to a Federal High Court in Nigeria. And in October 2020, the court came down with a judgment, that extraordinary rendition was a violation of his constitutional rights, his fundamental rights and they awarded him N500 million, Nigerian Naira, that is about $800,000.
“So all round, everywhere that this matter has gone to including in July 2022 before the Human Rights Council at the United Nations, the Council came down with an opinion that what happened to Kanu in Kenya that brought him to Nigeria is a very grave violation of international law and directed that he should be released unconditionally.
“And of course the Court of Appeal in Nigeria did come down with a similar judgment in the same October 2022, discharging Kanu of all charges, and banned any further trial in any court in Nigeria, as a direct consequence of the extraordinary rendition.”
“So what more can you ask, for a man to deserve his freedom?” he added.

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru donated 14 new SUVs to newly ordained priests of the Abakaliki Diocese, presenting the vehicles during their ordination at St. Theresa’s Catholic Cathedral in the state capital on Saturday.
The governor’s generosity comes despite the prevailing economic difficulties and Ebonyi State’s struggles with poverty, as reflected in its low ranking on the poverty index.
Governor Nwifuru explained that the donation of vehicles to the newly ordained priests was intended to support and facilitate their spiritual work, enabling them to effectively serve their flock and spread the word of God.
Last July, Governor Nwifuru showed similar generosity, gifting five vehicles to newly ordained priests, demonstrating his consistent support for the religious community in Ebonyi State.
Meanwhile, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, Ebonyi State ranks as the poorest state in Southern Nigeria, with a staggering 80% poverty rate, placing it fourth on the national poverty index. The state trails only Sokoto, Taraba, and Jigawa, all located in the Northern region of the country, in terms of poverty levels.
However, concerns are being raised about Governor Nwifuru’s priorities, as civil servants in Ebonyi State have recently expressed disappointment and frustration over the meagre N10,000 salary increment, which falls short of their expectations, sparking questions about the allocation of resources in the state.

On July 5, the village of Komar in Donetsk Oblast was subjected to a brutal attack by Russian forces, leading to the death of a woman and injuring at least 20 others, as reported by Governor Vadym Filashkin. This tragic incident unfolded when three Russian guided aircraft bombs struck the center of Komar, a frontline settlement deeply affected by the ongoing conflict....Click Here To Continue Reading>>
The powerful explosions inflicted extensive damage, impacting 13 homes, four businesses, two high- rise buildings, two administrative buildings, and other key infrastructural facilities. One of the injured victims later succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment.
The exact nature of the weaponry used in this attack remains under investigation. However, the use of guided aircraft bombs suggests a deliberate and targeted strike, aiming to maximize destruction in a specific area. This tactic is indicative of the broader strategy employed by Russian forces in the region, which involves the use of advanced military technology to exert control and instill fear among the local population.
Donetsk Oblast, due to its strategic location near the battle lines, frequently experiences assaults from Russian forces.
The region has become a focal point in the ongoing conflict, with the Russian military actively seeking to annex the entire Donetsk region. This ambition has led to continuous and intense combat, with civilian areas often caught in the crossfire. The attack on Komar is just one example of the numerous assaults that have severely impacted the region, resulting in significant casualties and widespread property damage.
The human toll of these attacks is profound. The death of a woman and the injury of at least 20 others in Komar highlights the severe consequences of the ongoing conflict on the civilian population. The destruction of homes and businesses further exacerbates the suffering, displacing families and disrupting livelihoods. The damage to administrative and infrastructural facilities also hampers essential services and support systems, compounding the challenges faced by the local community.
The frequent and intense assaults on Donetsk Oblast reflect the broader objectives of the Russian military. By targeting key areas and employing advanced weaponry, Russian forces aim to weaken resistance and establish control over the region. This strategy not only involves direct military engagements but also seeks to undermine the morale and resilience of the civilian population.
The international community has been closely monitoring the situation in Donetsk Oblast and other conflict zones within Ukraine. The ongoing attacks underscore the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de- escalate tensions and seek a resolution to the conflict. Humanitarian organizations continue to call for increased support and protection for civilians affected by the violence, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international humanitarian laws and ensuring the safety and well- being of non- combatants.
In response to the attacks, Ukrainian military and defense forces have been mobilizing to defend the region and counter the Russian offensive. The resilience and determination of the Ukrainian forces are crucial in resisting the aggression and protecting their territory. However, the scale and intensity of the attacks present significant challenges, requiring substantial resources and international support.
The situation in Komar and the broader Donetsk Oblast is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict on local communities. The need for a comprehensive and sustainable solution becomes increasingly critical as the conflict continues. Efforts to negotiate ceasefires, engage in peace talks, and address the root causes of the conflict are essential in preventing further escalation and fostering long- term stability in the region.
In conclusion, the attack on Komar on July 5 by Russian forces, resulting in the death of a woman and injuring at least 20 others, underscores the severe and ongoing nature of the conflict in Donetsk Oblast. The extensive damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure highlights the profound impact on the civilian population. The situation calls for urgent international attention and concerted efforts to mitigate the humanitarian crisis and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The resilience of the Ukrainian defense forces and the support of the international community are crucial in addressing the challenges and working towards a stable and secure future for the region.
