The document revealed that ” more than NGN 700 billion in cash bribes were paid by citizens to public officials in 2023. ” The year that Buhari handed over the government to Mr. Tinubu after spending five of the twelve months of the year as the President.
According to the report, it was gathered that the total amount of money that ended up in the pocket of government officials as a bribe was NGN 721 billion, which was 0. 35 per cent of the entire Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.
” Overall, it is estimated that a total of roughly NGN 721 billion (US$1. 26 billion) was paid in cash bribes to public officials in Nigeria in 2023, corresponding to 0. 35 per cent of the entire Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria, ” NBS revealed.
” This survey round is particularly strategic as it was conducted during a period of governmental transition, providing vital insights into the state of corruption and progress made in mitigating its impacts, ” it added.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that the document was released a few months after some officials of the Nigerian Government were allegedly demanding bribes to the tune of $150 million from global cryptocurrency giant Binance
