The Ogun State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a bill aimed at enhancing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the state. The bill proposes the establishment of an electricity market, regulatory bodies for the power sector, and measures to enforce consumer rights and responsibilities. Majority Leader Mr. Yusuf Serif (APC-Ado Odo Ota 1) moved for the third reading of the bill, with Adeleye seconding the motion.
During the second reading on August 28, lawmakers debated the bill’s significance, with many expressing gratitude to both federal and state governments, along with the National Assembly, for transferring electricity regulation from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent Legislative List.
They noted that this shift empowers states to manage electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within their borders.
The legislators believe the move will foster competition among electricity providers, improve the business climate, and attract industrial investments.
