President Akufo-Addo made this pledge during a farewell call by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Henryk Mieczyslaw Jagodzinski, at the Jubilee House in Accra. Most Rev. Jagodzinski, the Ambassador of the Catholic Church to Ghana, is departing for South Africa after a four-year tenure, with his successor to be announced on June 29, 2024.
The President highlighted the importance of safeguarding the democratic process, stating, “the choice of a leader for our country should be the unreserved and unqualified exercise of the sovereign will of the people.”
He pledged to ensure that Ghanaians could choose their President and Members of Parliament without interference.
Acknowledging the significance of this year’s elections, President Akufo-Addo noted it marks the ninth successive general election in Ghana. He also reflected on his tenure, with six months remaining, and the upcoming transition to a new President and Parliament.
The President underscored the stability and longevity of the Fourth Republic, attributing it to the sacrifices of the people and leaders. He called for the continued support and cooperation of the Church, praising its role in education, healthcare, agriculture, and social development.
President Akufo-Addo also expressed gratitude to the outgoing Apostolic Nuncio for facilitating interactions with Pope Francis, which helped strengthen relations between the Holy City and Ghana.
