While allies of the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara are yet to react on the appeal Court judgment which vacated the state High Court injunction that sacked Martin Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers loyal to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as members of the State House of Assembly, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha has hailed the verdict....Click Here To Continue Reading>>
Recall that Justice Charles Wali of a Rivers State High Court had on May 10, 2023 issued an interim injunction restraining the pro-Wike lawmakers led by Hon. Martin Amaehwule from parading themselves as members of the Assembly, after purportedly dumping the political party that sponsored their elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The court’s order followed a suit filed by Victor Oko-Jumbo and others loyal to the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who contended that Amaewhule and others who defected from the PDP to the APC, forfeited their membership of the Assembly since December 13, 2023, when their seats were declared vacant by the then factional Speaker, Hon. Edison Ehie, who later resigned and was appointed the Chief of Staff to Governor Fubara.
The High Court granted the prayers of the plaintiffs and barred the pro-Wike lawmakers from accessing the Assembly complex or carrying out any legislative assignments.
Dissatisfied, Amaewhule and his colleagues approached the Appeal Court to overrule the state high court’s order, arguing that the court acted beyond its jurisdiction when it issued the restraining order against the 25 lawmakers, urging the court to also invalidate all the legislative actions taken by the Oko-Jumbo led Rivers State House of Assembly.
Delivering judgment on the suit on Thursday, the appellate court sitting in Abuja, vacated the lower court’s order that sacked the pro-Wike Rivers lawmakers, declaring that the Rivers State High Court lacked the requisite jurisdiction to restrain the lawmakers from performing their duties state assembly members.
Reacting to the Appeal Court’s judgment, the Rivers APC Chairman, Tony Okocha expressed delight over the development, stating: “I don’t know of any sweeter moment than this because the Court of Appeal judgment has come to settle gray areas in our society.
“I had always said that the state was sitting on a keg of gunpowder and that at some point it was a regime of supermarket orders. “The court of appeal said that the order sort be made or made by Justice C. N Wali was in nullity.
“The Court of Appeal said it did not follow the principles of fair hearing. So all of those are thrown into the trash can. It consolidated all issues and dealt with them one by one.
“At the end of the day, as meticulous as they are, I commend their industry. It is perfect reasoning that they have espoused. The worst any other person can do is to see whether they can approach the supreme Court and I do not know how the supreme Court will say that a judge that has no jurisdiction over a matter and assumed jurisdiction that such a court is right.
“I think the Court of Appeal should recommend that judge for scrutiny by the NJC, so that some of them will learn their lessons. He knew, it was deliberate, it was pecuniary interest that must have led him. So all matters, Omotosho, CN Wali are all dead.
“The court said the status quo before the matter was at all instituted in any court. So what is the implementation, that Martin Amaewhule is the Speaker and that Martin has all the powers. All the actions they had gotten involved in, they are nullified, the Commissioners they screened, the so-called attorney general,” he added. ...Click Here To Continue Reading>>

DAILY POST recalls a viral report suggesting that the Nigerian Army only runs a School of Islamic Affairs, ignoring other faiths.
Clarifying the report, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement on Monday, described the report as not only fake but also as making a futile effort to portray the Nigerian Army as exclusively encouraging religious bigotry among its personnel.

“The Nigerian Army is a secular organisation that upholds the principle of religious freedom for all its personnel and ensures that personnel, irrespective of rank, are free to practice their religions without any form of bias or endorsement of a specific religion.
“Our unwavering commitment to secularism guarantees that religious diversity is respected and accommodated, allowing soldiers to observe their faith without hindrance to their duties.
“Our dedication to secularism is aimed at fostering a professional and inclusive environment where individuals can serve their country without fear of religious discrimination or bias.

Reacting to the development, AbdulShally, noted that a baby mama shouldn’t expect a wife’s benefit.

Davido on his part claimed that Sophia rejected the offer to stay in an apartment he bought at Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos, insisting that he must continue to pay over N20 million yearly rent. And also rejected his N5 million accommodation support.
Speaking during an Instagram live session with popular media personality, Daddy Freeze, AbdulShally stated that N5 million offer is sufficient for yearly housing allowance.
She said; ” I’m not for or against any of them because nobody really knows the story. But, to me oo, I said N5 million is enough money for housing allowance for anywhere in Nigeria. My own opinion is based on my personal experience. A baby mama shouldn’t expect a wife’s benefit.”

The Lagos State Government has issued a 48-hour eviction notice to property owners and squatters in illegal structures along the Gbagada-Bariga Channel.
This was disclosed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, on Sunday.
Wahab said any structure deliberately built to obstruct the free flow of water in the area will be removed.
According to him, the illegal buildings are responsible for the recent flooding that occurred in the area on Wednesday, which caused the collapse of a two-story building in the Mushin area, and disrupted transportation.
The statement read: “The drainage channel, which defloods Bariga, Gbagada, Sholuyi downstream communities and environs, and discharges into System 1, has been taken over by squatters who have constituted a nuisance and security risk to the estate.
“Property owners who deliberately built structures to obstruct the free flow of water in the area will also be removed. Shanties were erected along the length of the channel, and their activities have blocked collectors that are supposed to carry stormwater into the channel, resulting in the flooding experienced during the week.”
He added that the operatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources will commence removal of such buildings after the expiration of the evacuation notice, in order to deflood the area.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said that strike is not imminent, if the Federal Government implements the agreements reached, in the next two weeks.
President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday (NAN).
It would be recalled that ASUU had threatened to embark on strike over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the federal government.
The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, had on June 26, invited the union for a meeting to deliberate on the lingering issues affecting universities and to avert the planned strike.
Osodeke said none of the agreements reached with the Federal Government had been implemented.
“At the meeting called by the Minister of Education, we agreed that after two weeks, we will meet to see the progress the government has made.
“We will also see what we will do next, if the government fails to implement the agreements reached.
“The meeting in the next two weeks is to see what they have done which will inform our decision,” he said.
The ASUU president said some of the demands included the non implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements.
He said the agreements had lingered for over six years and the government was yet to implement them.
Osodeke said the academic allowances due to their members had also accumulated for over six years and nothing had been done about it
On the issue of revitalisation funds, he said they agreed on the NEEDs Assessment Report to raise N200 billion yearly, for five years.
“Since 2013, only one has been paid. We need revitalisation funds to upgrade our universities to standard, so that we can have students and lecturers from outside the country,” he said.
Oshodeke added that the government was yet to stop the proliferation of universities adding that many new universities were being approved without funds to run them.
He said the government was also yet to exit the university salary payment from Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System!(IPPIS) as approved by the Federal Executive Council in January
He said their members were still being paid by IPPIS against the directive by the FEC.

The Initiative for Grassroots Advancement in Nigeria (INGRA) has berated the Kogi State Government for extending the tenure of Transition Committee Chairmen for another six months.
The Executive Director of INGRA, Hamza Aliyu, in a statement on Monday, described the decision of the Kogi State House of Assembly to approve Governor Ododo’s request for the Council Chairmen to remain in office until January 8, 2025, as undemocratic and uncalled for.
Aliyu argued that the issue of finance, which Governor Ododo cited as a reason for not conducting council elections in Kogi State, is unfounded. He stressed that it is unconstitutional to deny citizens at the grassroots their legitimate right to elect their leaders.
The statement reads in part: “In June 2022, the Kogi State House of Assembly passed the Local Government Autonomy Bill during the 1999 Constitutional Amendment process under the Buhari Administration. This move was hailed by all, despite the amendment not being successful due to not getting the required concurrence of 24 state assemblies.
“The move brought hope to citizens that at last, we as a state are moving in the right direction as it concerns governance at the local level. It was heartbreaking when, in January 2024, the former administration of then-Governor Yahaya Bello, upon the expiration of the tenure of the elected Local Government Councils, which he midwifed, appointed Caretaker Committees rather than bequeath an elected successor to the Councils.
“It was devastating to citizens who had expected, called for, and wished for continuity in the local government democratic culture as enshrined in Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
“The reasons for poor finances for the non-conduct of elections at the local government level by the state government are not only untenable but downright unbelievable.
“The January-April 2024 NET allocation (minus all deductions) to the state and 21 local governments, as stated by the Federal Ministry of Finance, stood at over N56.4 billion (fifty-six billion naira). This is way more than enough to conduct any form of local government council elections, providing citizens the opportunity to decide who governs them at the local level.
“This is a violation of their constitutional right to participate in governance and deprives them of the sole dividend of democracy—participation.
“It is evident that other reasons, not finance, could be adduced for this inaction. It would have been unthinkable and definitely bordering on unconstitutionality for the President of Nigeria to not conduct elections after four years at the state level and appoint caretaker governors.
“It means that governors, who are the primary beneficiaries of elections conducted by the Federal Government, must not deny those same rights to others at the local council levels.”
He called on Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo to, as a matter of urgency, rescind this extension and make arrangements to immediately organize elections into the local councils to give citizens, especially youths, the opportunity to practice democracy and strengthen the culture of elections.
Aliyu also called on the Kogi State House of Assembly to ensure that democratic principles and structures are protected and guarded, no matter the pressure and circumstances.
DAILY POST recalls that the tenure of the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen in Kogi State will expire today, July 8, 2024.

American former tennis player, Serena Williams, has seemingly taken sides with her compatriot, Kendrick Lamar, in his ongoing hip-hop beef with Canadian superstar, Drake.
This is as she recently praised one of Lamar’s diss tracks targeted at Drake, ‘Not Like Us’ at the Essence Fest.
She admitted that she was in love with the song, describing it as “the hit of the summer.”
Williams added that whenever the song comes up, she vibes to it.
She said, “Oh, I love that song [‘Not Like Us’]. It’s the hit of the summer! Whew! When they play that jam, I’m jamming.”
DAILY POST recalls that American rapper, Rick Ross, was recently attacked in Drake’s native country, Canada, after he played ‘Not Like Us’ at a Toronto concert.
Kendrick Lamar and Drake began dissing each other after the former fired shots at the latter and J.Cole on Future and Metro Boomin’s ‘Like That.’
On the record, Lamar asserted that contrary to assumptions that he, Drake and J.Cole are currently the “big 3” in the hip-hop industry, he is the world’s biggest rapper.
Since then, J.Cole and Drake have responded accordingly, releasing their own diss tracks targeted at Lamar; however, the former later apologised and deleted his diss track.
Drake, on the other hand, has continued to respond with bars to Lamar’s subsequent diss tracks, forcing the war to rage on.

The federal government has categorised all electricity companies, including the Generation and Distribution Companies (GenCos and DisCos), as those exempted from the payment of Withholding Tax in the country.
The new Withholding Tax regulation document signed by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, explained that the new Withholding Tax regulation was proposed by the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee led by Taiwo Oyedele and took effect from July 1, 2024.
According to the document, “The electricity and gas companies are categorised as manufacturing and production and therefore exempted from Withholding Tax.”
It explained that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Withholding Tax (WHT) serves as a prepayment of Income Tax deducted at rates between 5 and 10 per cent depending on transaction.
According to the document, Withholding Tax was introduced into Nigeria’s tax system in 1977 as an advance payment of Income Tax on specified transactions.
Oyedele said the tax system provided the government with a steady revenue stream and helped curb tax evasion, stressing that the regime had expanded over time, becoming increasingly complex and burdensome.
He said the complexity led to ambiguities regarding compliance, eligible transactions, applicable rates and the timing of remittance, saying that the newly approved regime aimed to address the challenges and introduce several key changes.
