He faulted the federal government for not protecting the people yet threatening them, as the people are afraid of becoming victims at the hands of these criminals. Abaribe said, “I think what is going on is not obedience. What is going on is fear. People are saying they don’t want to be killed because they do not know who the hoodlum on the streets will be.

What has happened now is that all the perpetrators of violence, criminals, hoodlums and kidnappers have suddenly become IPOB. When you catch them, they call themselves IPOB.

People see that because they are not going to get enough protection, there is no way the police or army can cover everywhere. So, what they do is simply wait for a vulnerable place, run in there, shoot one or two people and then run away. So, it is not compliance; it is fear.”

The southeast has been experiencing sit-at-home orders, often given by Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa, who calls himself the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) with the aim of persuading the federal government to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Shortly after Kanu was rearrested in 2021 on terrorism charges, Ekpa introduced the sit-at-home order, halting all business activities in the southeast states.

This move has caused a significant loss of revenue to the states involved and discomfort to the people.

All efforts to encourage residents to go about their daily activities have proved futile. As a result, Abaribe claims that the people are not disobeying the government but are afraid for their lives.
