Kanu, the IPOB leader, has been in detention at the State Security Services since 2021 after being renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria by Nigeria’s secret police. He is charged with terrorism.

Despite the recent meeting of South-East Governors’ Forum, held in Enugu, which resolved to meet President Bola Tinubu for political solutions to Kanu’s case, IPOB, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr Emma Powerful, warned politicians trying to sabotage Kanu’s release to quickly retrace their steps.

According to Powerful, there were efforts by some politicians to frustrate the effort to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu “whom Appeal Court has discharged and acquitted on 13th October 2022”. He advised those behind such moves to retrace their steps, adding that “we know of their secret meetings and discussions against MNK”.

Powerful said, “If they continue with their sabotage, their names will be made public soon. Also, some of the political jobbers in the South-East Region working against the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should know that we are following the activities closely.”

He alleged that such individuals were holding secret meetings with South-East governors to frustrate the clarion call of the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, “who incidentally is the only political prisoner in Nigeria currently”.

He continued, “We warn those sabotaging the unconditional release of our leader to stop provoking IPOB. The saboteurs should know that nothing happens in the South-East Region without IPOB getting the intel ahead of time. Those Igbos involved in this dastardly act to frustrate the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should retrace their steps quickly.

“IPOB-ESN is not begging them to stop, but they should be ready for the consequences of their oppositional actions.”

Recall that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the request by Kanu’s lead counsel, Barr Aloy Ejimakor, to initiate moves for political solutions to Kanu’s incarceration.
