Three men were convicted to death by hanging by an Osun State High Court in Ile- Ife, Osun State, on Tuesday, 9th July 2024 for the gruesome murder of Mukaila Adebayo, a NYSC corps member, during a robbery operation in Osogbo, the capital city of the state.
The parties involved in this case were a herbs vendor named Jelili Kareem; a commercial motorcycle rider, Oludayo Oludele, and an electrician who goes by the name, Muyiwa Awodeji.

Following the information obtained by news reporters, on January 28, 2020, in the Omo West Area of Osogbo, the three men allegedly planned and carried out a robbery by obtaining Adebayo’ s cell phone, recharge cards, and other valuables before murdering him. At the time, Adebayo was rounding up the one- year required service requirement for graduates.

In addition, those facing charges first showed up in court on October 8, 2020, and entered not guilty pleas to all of the charges brought against them. They are accused of crimes including murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy.
Joining the three individuals who were arraigned was Buliaminu Anifowose, a vulcanizer who purportedly purchased recharge cards that were stolen from the deceased, Adebayo following his gunshot death.
During the proceedings, Mr. Muyiwa Ogunleye, the Ministry of Justice’ s prosecuting attorney, told the court that Adebayo’ s daughter was present when the defendants opened fire on him.
When giving the opportunity to speak, the defendants’ defense attorneys, Folashade Ipede and Suleiman Akano of the Legal Aid Council, as well as Shina Olaniyan, argued that the prosecutors had not proven its case against them.
In his ruling, Justice Adedapo Adeniji declared that the prosecutor established the defendants’ guilt of the criminal activity, leading to the conviction of three of them for armed robbery and murder. After that, Adeniji released Anifowose but sentenced Kareem, Oludele, and Awodeji to be executed by hanging.
