His initial attempt was in the 1993 Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries, where he lost to Moshood Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe. Speculation has arisen that the former vice president may consider running again in 2027 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), raising concerns about his health and physical fitness for another presidential bid.
In an interview on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, Momodu argued that age should not be a determining factor for political office.
He pointed out the performance of younger politicians as a reference, asking, “What has been the impact of these younger people who claim to have experience? Look at their states—what have they achieved with the resources given to them?”
Momodu emphasized that age alone neither qualifies nor disqualifies someone from holding office, citing U.S. President Joe Biden’s election after Barack Obama as an example. “It’s all about God and destiny,” he said. “If Alhaji Atiku decides to run, good luck to him. If he doesn’t, that’s fine too. But why should anyone try to silence him? What are they afraid of?”
When asked whether Atiku could challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, Momodu refrained from giving a direct answer. Instead, he suggested that some people believe Atiku remains a significant political force. “If he can mobilize a major political party, he will certainly be a threat,” Momodu added.
He also recalled that Muhammadu Buhari was chosen as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in 2015 because he was viewed as the only figure capable of uniting the northern region.
Momodu’s comments follow remarks by former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, who advised Atiku to retire from his presidential ambitions due to his advancing age.
