Osoba, speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South West Zone Assembly meeting held over the weekend at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, noted that Tinubu has the backing of these leaders for his presidency, and they are poised to support him should he seek re- election in 2027.
In his remarks, Osoba recalled that in 2007, after Tinubu’ s tenure as governor of Lagos State, southwest leaders, including himself, agreed to elevate Tinubu from Lagos politics to the national stage.
This decision was made to represent the Yoruba people’ s interests at the highest levels of Nigerian politics.
” Seventeen years ago, after Bola finished his tenure as governor of Lagos, we gathered at a meeting hosted by Alhaji Hamsa, who was our leader at that time, ” Osoba recounted.
” It was during that meeting that we all agreed that Tinubu should move from Lagos politics to the national level.
This was to ensure that the Yoruba people were properly represented at the topmost level of Nigerian politics. ”
The former governor emphasized that Tinubu did not rise to power by his own doing but through the efforts and collective decisions of southwest political figures.
” Bola didn’ t make himself the President of Nigeria; we did. We, the leaders in the southwest, decided that he was the one who should represent our interests. ”
Osoba also reflected on the political history of the Yoruba people and their previous efforts to support presidential bids by leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo and MKO Abiola.
He noted that while these attempts did not succeed, Tinubu’ s rise to the presidency marked a long- awaited achievement for the Yoruba people.
” Many of us here today worked hard to support the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’ s quest for the presidency, but he wasn’ t allowed to get there.
Similarly, we rallied behind the late MKO Abiola’ s presidential ambition, but we lost him, and with him, the opportunity.
We fought, and many of us suffered for the mission to improve this country. Today, we are thankful that some of us are alive to witness Bola Tinubu’ s success, ” Osoba said.
” I want to plead with everyone to accept his shortcomings, whatever they may be. He is working to do better.
He is a Yoruba son, and after his first four- year term, I believe he will serve another four years, ” Osoba urged.
