Under pressure, DSS allows Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers to visit the IPOB leader in custody.

The Department of State Security (DSS) has finally allowed Nnamdi Kanu to meet with his lawyers after a prolonged legal struggle.
Reports indicate that Adeola Ajayi, the Director-General of the DSS, has granted Kanu’s legal team permission to visit the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu, who has been in custody facing terrorism charges since his contentious repatriation from Kenya in June 2021, had faced restricted legal access, leading to numerous legal challenges and protests from his defense team.
Kanu’s legal representatives, led by special counsel Aloy Ejimakor, had repeatedly accused the DSS of blocking their access to him, despite a court order issued in May 2023 by Justice Binta Nyako, which mandated the DSS to grant visitation rights three times a week.
After continued denials, the court summoned Ajayi in October, warning that he could face imprisonment if the restrictions persisted.
This development came after a recent intervention by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Abia State Representative Obi Aguocha, who visited Kanu in detention and helped broker what Ejimakor referred to as a “political compromise” to resolve the issue.
On Monday, Ejimakor announced on social media that the meeting with Kanu marked the first successful legal visit since September 27. The visit, which included Ndidi Awurum, a U.S.-based Nigerian, was reportedly authorized directly by the DSS director-general.
