Maureen, from New South Wales, bought a stash of baby clothes from a local op shop and ensured she washed them first.
The mum-of-three soaked the clothes overnight in the bathtub filled with warm soapy water, and by the morning it had turned to a filthy dark grey with particles floating around.
‘This is why I always wash secondhand baby clothing… understand it could be a bit of dye but the amount of dirt left in the bottom of the bath was astonishing,’ Maureen wrote.
Photos of the ‘gross’ water left other parents gobsmacked, and many said they too ensure secondhand clothes are always washed first.

To remove the dirt lurking in the clothing, Maureen used a ‘cheap “black and gold” laundry soaker’ and sprinkled it into the water.
Shocked mums who were ‘grossed out’ said they would’ve washed the clothes on a hot cycle in the washing machine. Others said they’ve been doing this ‘for years’.
‘I wash everything. If it’s secondhand I take a bit more care washing. If the fabric can take it, 60 degree wash with normal detergent and in wash booster. At the very minimum 40 degrees,’ one wrote.
‘I do this in the washi machine so it can be spun out. Soak overnight then wash next day,’ another said.
Previously another mum was disgusted after using the new UV light vacuum from Kmart to clean her son’s mattress.
Michelle, from Melbourne, bought the $49 appliance after reading positive reviews, but couldn’t believe the amount of dust and dirt lurking below the surface.

‘I thought that maybe being memory foam they wouldn’t contain much dust but boy was I wrong,’ she captioned the social media post.
‘I didn’t realise that the velour cover that encases the mattress could hold so much dust!’
Michelle admitted the mattress likely hadn’t been cleaned in ‘a couple years’, but the mattress protector is washed regularly.
‘I am still shocked at the results, however I will sleep better tonight after seeing what came out!’ she said.
