Meanwhile, amid the controversies, the Rivers State All Progressive Congress, APC, Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Okocha, admitted that election results were written in his office when he was the Chief of Staff to a former Governor of the State.
Mr. Tony made this known in a video which has gone viral on social media. He claimed that the recent decision of the Supreme Court over the local government autonomy will not work because the Governors will continue to influence the election of the local government Chairmen.
According to him, rigging is the only reason why the political party of the executive Governor always wins the local government elections. He explained that the Governors are fond of writing the results of the local government election in their respective States and will only hand over the sheet to the State Electoral Commission to announce the results.
Speaking further in the video, he revealed that results were written in his office during his days as the Chief of Staff in Rivers; therefore, he knows how the system works.
He, however, suggested that the National Assembly, as a matter of urgency, should amend the constitution to give INEC the power to conduct the local government elections, stressing that Nigerians will not see any change at the grassroots if the State electoral body oversees the elections.
He stated that the Governors systematically killed opposition at the grassroots because they control the State election tribunal and even the State High Court.
