The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the recovery of drugs and illicit substances from the residence of Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, who represents Kwara South in the Nigerian Senate. The discovery occurred during a raid on his home in the Government Reservation Area (GRA) of Ilorin, Kwara State.
NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, shared these details during a press briefing at the agency’ s headquarters in Abuja. The raid, which took place in February 2024, resulted in the arrest of two of Senator Ashiru’ s aides.....Read Full Article>>
The NDLEA further addressed recent allegations made by the senator, where he criticized the agency’ s integrity, accusing it of being corrupt and compromised. According to the NDLEA, these accusations stem from personal grievances, as the senator had been directly involved in prior incidents where his associates were apprehended in connection to drug- related activities. The agency confirmed that during the raid on the senator’ s residence, drugs were discovered, and the two aides were taken into custody.
Babafemi elaborated on a separate case in 2023, in which intelligence reports revealed that some of the senator’ s associates, known locally as ” Omo Senator, ” were involved in the sale of illicit drugs in Offa, the senator’ s hometown. A subsequent raid in June 2023 led to the arrest of one of these associates, identified as Oluwatosin Odepidan.
During the operation, NDLEA agents confiscated methamphetamine and cannabis from him. Efforts to have the case against Odepidan dropped, including a visit from the senator’ s personal assistant, were unsuccessful. Odepidan was charged in court, although he later jumped bail. He was eventually re- arrested in 2024 and convicted in June of the same year.
The NDLEA emphasized that these incidents likely contributed to Senator Ashiru’ s hostile stance towards the agency. The agency dismissed his accusations as baseless and noted that no similar claims have been made by any other public or private entity. Despite the senator’ s allegations, the NDLEA remains steadfast in its mission to combat drug trafficking and misuse. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug networks, including those that may have links to the senator’ s household.
The NDLEA also highlighted its longstanding reputation as a leader in drug enforcement, with recognition from both local and international organizations, and assured the public that it would continue its efforts to maintain law and order in Nigeria.
