The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates in Ghana, with hundreds of candidates facing sanctions over examination malpractice.
The Council announced that the results have been distributed to schools through Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Candidates can also access their results online through WAEC’s official results portal.
More Than 620,000 Candidates Sat the Examination
According to WAEC, a total of 620,243 candidates participated in this year’s examination.
The figure comprises:
- 304,415 male candidates
- 315,828 female candidates
The candidates were drawn from 20,789 schools and sat the examination across 2,237 centres nationwide.
WAEC also disclosed that 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination.
Support Provided for Candidates With Special Needs
The Council said the examination accommodated candidates with special educational needs to ensure an inclusive assessment process.
The affected candidates included:
- 136 visually impaired candidates
- 282 hearing-impaired candidates
- 510 candidates requiring other forms of educational support
WAEC noted that candidates wishing to access their results online can do so through its official website.

Hundreds Sanctioned for Examination Malpractice
Following investigations into reported examination irregularities and script marking, WAEC’s 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions against several candidates.
According to the Council:
- Subject results of 496 candidates have been cancelled.
- Entire results of 105 candidates have been cancelled.
- Subject results of 119 candidates have been withheld.
- Entire results of 48 candidates remain withheld pending further investigations.
Results From 229 Schools Under Review
WAEC also announced that the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny.
The Council said investigations into the affected cases are expected to be completed by August 31, 2026.
After the review, the withheld results will either be released or cancelled depending on the findings.
Candidates affected by cancellations or withheld results have been advised to visit WAEC’s irregularities portal or use the dedicated withheld/cancelled results link on the Council’s homepage for more information.
School heads can also access the details using their official login credentials.

WAEC Warns Against Result-Upgrading Scams
The examination body cautioned candidates and the public against fraudsters claiming they can alter or upgrade examination results for a fee.
WAEC stressed that its examination results are secure, tamper-proof and fully verifiable.
The Council also thanked the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, security agencies, school authorities, supervisors, invigilators, examiners and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful conduct of the 2026 BECE and the timely release of the results.
