Jonathan made the clarification in a statement issued on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Ikechukwu Eze, describing the report as false and fabricated.
Jonathan rejects viral claim
According to Eze, the report falsely alleged that Jonathan disclosed receiving an offer of ₦500 billion to enter the 2027 presidential race in a bid to divide votes in Nigeria’s South-South region.
He described the claim as baseless and said it was intended to drag the former president into unnecessary political controversy.
Media aide questions credibility of report
Eze said the publication failed to provide essential details expected in a credible news report.
According to him, the report did not state:
- Where the alleged statement was made.
- When Jonathan supposedly made the statement.
- Who allegedly offered the money.
- Any witnesses or evidence supporting the claim.
He argued that the absence of these details showed the report bore the hallmarks of fabricated news.
Public urged to verify political claims
The former president’s media aide urged Nigerians to disregard the report and verify sensational political stories before sharing them.
“Jonathan was never involved in the ‘₦500 billion offer to divide the South’s votes against Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections.'”
He added that election periods often witness an increase in misinformation and fake attributions.
