Fresh details have emerged over the decision by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to remove lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor from his legal team, with a member of the defence team alleging that disagreements over legal strategy and case management contributed to the move.
Barrister Christopher Chidera, who identified himself as part of Kanu’s legal team and also described himself as a public affairs analyst, made the claims in a statement issued on Tuesday while addressing public discussions surrounding the terrorism case involving the separatist leader.
According to Chidera, the decision to disengage Ejiofor followed concerns over legal decisions taken after a 2022 Court of Appeal judgment involving Kanu’s case. Chidera alleged that the previous legal team failed to challenge certain court processes relating to the Federal Government’s actions after the appellate court ruling, a development he claimed contributed to prolonged legal complications.
He argued that the failure to raise jurisdictional objections at key stages created conditions that later allowed additional proceedings to continue.
“The failure to challenge the legal process at its foundation enabled developments that should never have occurred,” Chidera stated while urging greater accountability and transparency around the handling of the case.
Chidera also alleged that disagreements later widened beyond legal strategy and affected relationships within Kanu’s inner circle and family. He claimed Kanu’s relatives demanded explanations over aspects of the legal approach and expressed dissatisfaction with how events unfolded.
These claims have not been independently verified, and there was no response from Ifeanyi Ejiofor within the report to address the allegations.
Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related proceedings before the Federal High Court in Abuja, had previously been represented by Ejiofor before later changing his legal representation during proceedings before Justice James Omotosho. Chidera said issues raised in the ongoing appeal include questions around jurisdiction, fair hearing and compliance with earlier court decisions.
The latest remarks add another layer to the already high-profile legal battle, with attention expected to remain on proceedings at the Court of Appeal and any future responses from parties involved in the dispute.
