The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement exercise targeting unregistered vehicles and vehicles operating with fake, concealed, or unauthorised number plates, introducing mobile courts to speed up legal action against offenders.
Police said the operation began on Wednesday following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as part of broader efforts to strengthen road security and improve vehicle identification across the state.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, mobile courts have been deployed to the headquarters of the state’s five area commands and selected locations within the Bauchi metropolis to support immediate prosecution of violations.
The enforcement campaign focuses on motorists driving without valid registration, using obscured plate numbers, or displaying registration details not authorised under existing vehicle laws.
Commenting on the initiative, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said authorities view unidentified vehicles as a growing security concern because they can make criminal investigations more difficult.
“Unregistered and unidentifiable vehicles remain a major security risk. Such vehicles are often used to perpetrate violent crimes like kidnapping and armed robbery. This enforcement is not aimed at harassing motorists, but at protecting lives and property,” the commissioner said.
Police warned that vehicles found violating registration requirements may be impounded, while offenders could face prosecution before the mobile courts. Sanctions may include fines and other penalties provided under Nigeria’s vehicle registration and licensing regulations.
Residents and motorists were advised to update vehicle documents, display number plates correctly, and avoid altering or covering registration details.
The command added that the enforcement exercise forms part of ongoing security measures intended to reduce the use of untraceable vehicles and improve public safety across Bauchi State. Authorities indicated that the operation will continue across the state.
