A desperate search is underway in Jigawa State after a canoe carrying about 40 passengers capsized, with at least 30 people feared dead in one of the state’s latest waterway tragedies.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Malamawar Yandutse village in Ringim Local Government Area, leaving families anxiously waiting for news as rescue teams continue searching for survivors.
Canoe Carrying About 40 Passengers Overturns
An eyewitness told DAILY POST that the canoe was transporting approximately 40 passengers—mostly women and children—when it overturned.
Rescue efforts began immediately after the accident, with local residents and emergency officials working together to recover victims and search for anyone who may still be alive.
Families of those on board have also been asked to help identify recovered bodies for burial.
Authorities Say Rescue Operation Is Ongoing
Confirming the incident, the Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Muhammad Bala Sanusi, said rescue operations were still in progress.
He explained that authorities had not yet established the exact number of fatalities or survivors, stressing that officials were continuing efforts to account for everyone believed to have been on the canoe.
Sanusi also noted that the cause of the accident had not yet been determined.
Public Urged to Await Official Figures
The Chairman of the Emergency Management Committee, Malam Habibu Dauda, also confirmed the incident and appealed to members of the public to remain calm.
He urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information until emergency authorities complete rescue operations and release an official update on the number of casualties and survivors.
The tragedy highlights the continued risks associated with water transportation in parts of Nigeria, where overcrowding, poor safety measures, and limited emergency response capabilities have contributed to recurring boating accidents.
