Gunmen invaded Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State in the early hours of Monday, killing two people, police have confirmed.
The motive for the attack had not been established as of the time of filing this report, while police said investigations were underway to identify those responsible.
Residents recount attack
Residents said the assailants stormed the community in what they described as a commando-style operation, moving from house to house in search of specific individuals.
A resident identified simply as Monica, whose husband was among those attacked, alleged that the gunmen came from a neighbouring community located in another local government area bordering Rumuodogo 2.
According to her, the attackers forced their way into her home at about 1:00 a.m., broke down the door and dragged her and her husband outside.
“They came by 1 a.m., broke our door and brought my husband and me outside. I was even naked when we were brought outside. They started beating my husband and shot him.
“They wanted to kill me too, but one of them said they should leave me because I am a woman,” she said.
Monica further alleged that the attackers accused members of her community of being responsible for the deaths of people whose bodies were reportedly discovered in a river last Monday.
Her claims have not been independently verified.
Community gripped by fear
The attack reportedly threw the community into panic, with some residents fleeing into nearby bushes for safety.
The identities of the two victims had not been officially released at the time of this report.
Police confirm incident
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, confirmed the attack.
“I can confirm the incident. Two persons were killed in the attack. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack and to arrest the perpetrators,” she said.
