A commercial motorcyclist has died after he was swept away by floodwaters in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night along Imudia Street after torrential rainfall, which lasted from about 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., triggered widespread flooding across the area.
Rider swept away while trying to retrieve motorcycle
According to sources, the rider had parked his motorcycle near a concrete drainage channel before taking shelter in a nearby makeshift shop as the rain became heavier.
However, floodwaters reportedly swept the motorcycle into the fast-flowing drainage.
The rider was said to have entered the water in an attempt to retrieve the motorcycle but was also swept away by the strong current.
Body later recovered
Residents said the victim’s body was later recovered, bringing the tragic incident to an end.
The prolonged rainfall reportedly caused severe flooding in parts of Agbor, with drainage channels overflowing and strong currents flowing through several streets.
